Richard Ashcroft

What are your opinions on the man? he came onto the scene in the early 90s with the verve, made two average albums then in 97' came what i and many others believe to be one of the best british albums of the 90s - urban hymns, which in my opinion, showed ashcroft to be a genuinly ingenius songwriter. sonnet, drugs dont work, lucky man, weeping willow, bittersweet symphony etc, great collection of songs. then came the big anti-climax of ashcrofts solo career, a wasted talent perhaps? well his new stuff is actualy rather good...keys to the world is easily the best thing hes done as a solo artist (not difficult granted) and it has gone some way to regenerating my faith in a man who i thought was one of the biggest talents of the 90s, fuck the gallaghers, anderson, alburn etc, this guy had more talent then them all and its just a shame we've only had a brief glimpse of it. anyway, most of you probably disagree with me, but what are your opinions?

Yes I agree he was/is a great songwritter and the first two Verve albums have some good moments as well. I love the new single 'Break the night with Colour' also.

He is some talent, but Christ on a Fibre-Optic Sleigh, Ive seen less bullshit come out of...well a bull... The man seems to have some kind of Christ complex, but while Liammy G gets the pis* ripped out of him for it, people bang on about Ashcroft being some kind of spiritual prophet with songs like "Sonnet". Some of his lines are as cringy as you'd find on "Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants", but I suppose he has a bit more star quality to pull them off.

Richard Ashcroft says he feels like Jesus Christ.

According to The Sun he said: "I love the man, I feel like him."

The Verve frontman continued: "There's only Richard Ashcroft and Liam Gallagher who know what it feels like. We're the only ones who know how many people we've touched and how powerful that is.

"I feel like I'm on a one-man mission. I'm here to use my tools and my gift to take them to a higher level."

(where do i puke?)

Haha yeah I've got a feeling he was just trying to create press. Either that or he is mental.

i'd say the later - likely due to excessive use of cocaine...

I think his best work came out with Verve when he still had alot of stuff to moan about. Now with all the money he's made maybe he's lost touch with everything that made him write brilliant songs in the first place.

Richard Ashcroft is obviously a talented man but he gets the personality bit so wrong. :p: I saw him last year and he spent half of his set talking about politics. The best part was when he said 'music and politics should never mix' but didn't take his own advice...

Yes, he really said that.

His solo stuff hasn't been too bad (I liked Music Is Power) but he's nothing without The Verve.
