I don't think he did, but what do you think? I mean, I know he had some pretty sad lyrics and stuff, but just look at the circumstances he was found in and tell me it was suicide.

This is so sad. Elliot Smith was one of our generation's best songwriters and in my opinion our modern day Bob Dylan. If you google "elliot smith suicide" you should get a few different articles about it.

It was suicide but the girlfriend might be under suspicion still just because it can't be completely ruled out that she could have done it. In favor of the suicide theory he was very depressed (as usual) and they were fighting. In favor of the homicide theory she pulled the knife out and they were fighting. The knife wounds were one to the heart and one to the abdomen which seems a little too premeditated to me to be an assault by another person in the heat of an argument.
