The Associates

More early 80s stuff ,which I seem to be listening to a lot lately.

Discovered this band a few months ago , even though i`ve been aware of them forever. Bit like the missing link between The Cure & Echo & The Bunnymen.

Have uploaded their debut (And best) album The Affectionate Punch for your listening pleasure here....

Here`s what allmusic.com say about it....

Formed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1979, the Associates comprised vocalist Billy Mackenzie and multi-instrumentalist Alan Rankine. Built on an eclectic mix of influences and interests ranging from art-rock to glam and disco, the group debuted with a manic cover of David Bowie's "Boys Keep Swinging," which earned them a contract with Fiction Records. Their 1980 debut LP, The Affectionate Punch, was a critically acclaimed work which expanded the duo's sound into both stark minimalism and melodramatic ballads, earning Mackenzie's powerful voice favorable comparisons to Scott Walker.

It's weird but I think I'll warm up to it.

Sulk>Affectionate Punch.

Love Associates in their orignal incarnation, think MacKensie's vocals are brilliant, and the production and arrangements are the work of lunatics let loose in a recording studio that could only have only have happened in the early 80s.

"Q Quarters" remains one of my all-time favorite singles.

I have not been too into The Associates, but there are some damn good songs here and there. "Breakfast" was pretty good as well.

Is Urban paying someone to bump a ton of his old threads? He's a charmer that one.

Screen13 02-02-2010 02:22 PM

I'm new here and I was just going through the threads to see what I can contribute to.

I was being tongue in cheek ;)
