Sebadoh

One of my favorite indie bands. I love Lou Barlow. III is my favorite album.

I`ve not listened to them in years.

Bubble & Scrape and Bakesale were bloody good albums

swim 12-19-2006 04:47 PM

Harmacy

get it.

Libquaker 12-19-2006 09:24 PM

I've downloaded a few songs of theirs, like what i'm hearing. Vampire and Beauty of the Ride rock!

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-21-2006 10:09 AM

I highly reccomend Lou Barlows side project Folk Implosion too.

Dare To Be Surprised is just as good as any Sebadoh album.

swim 12-22-2006 10:54 AM

Do you have any of his solo stuff? I can't seem to get hold of anything more than a few songs.

I probably like this band more than Sebadoh , they have a little bit of groove to them.

This is a really good live recording.

Kevorkian Logic 01-27-2007 06:54 PM

they're comming to a concert place near me. Do you think they are worth seeing live? I'm a bit skeptical.

swim 01-27-2007 07:37 PM

I'd personally give my foot to see them live but I'm big Lou Barlow fan boy.

Kevorkian Logic 01-27-2007 08:57 PM

Well, the concert place they're playing is the Cat's cradle in Carborro (chapel hill), I don't know how close you live to Chapel hill from wherever in North Carolina you live.

It's not an issue with the music, I like it a lot. They just give the vibe of sucking live.

swim 01-27-2007 09:09 PM

It's the middle of the week. Damn. gah. That's why I don't even check Cat's Craddle's site anymore because they have so many good artists that I rather not know what I'm missing. I live like 2 hours east of Chapel Hill and I don't have my liscence so yea. As for quality download the recording and listen for yourself. It sounds pretty good to me.

Sneer 04-10-2010 07:29 PM

Amazing amazing amazing band. Why it's taken me so long to comment on them is a mystery. III, Bubble & Scrape, Bakesale and Harmacy are all the bee's knees. I'd take Sebadoh over Dinosaur Jr any day.

sidewinder 04-11-2010 11:29 PM

Hmm I'm surprised I've never posted in here either. I've definitely listened to them a lot in the last2-3 years. I got Harmacy around 2002 or 2003 but it never really sank in. Then a few years ago I was driving around and the local indie station played 'On Fire' and it really hit me. So I pulled Harmacy off the shelf and that was that. It's unfortunate that pretty much all of their albums have their share of filler, but Bakesale and Harmacy are pretty damn solid. I also like The Sebadoh and Bubble & Scrape but a bit less. I think III is way overrated and has way too much crap in it. I might have loved it in the early 90s...but now it just sounds like silly garage BS, mostly, and it's way too damn long.

I love Sebadoh, and Folk Implosion, but I still definitely perfer Dinosaur Jr. Though Harmacy and Dare to Be Surprised are two of my favorite albums. No one mentioned Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock, I think it's just as good as Bubble & Scrape or III.

Violent & Funky 04-12-2010 08:37 PM

If all of their songs sounded more like this I would enjoy them more:

Sebadoh are just more up my street. Dont get me wrong, I love DJ's music, I really dig the melodic, distorted style of Mascis' guitar playing and I love the whole 'power trio' set up. But Sebadoh are just more unhinged with a greater variation in their output. I generally prefer Barlow to Mascis whilst I also think Gaffney produces really interesting sound collages and Loewenstein is a very underrated songwriter. I mean come on, Happily Divided and Not Too Amused are two of Sebadohs best songs.

As for Sidewinder finding III overrated... I strongly disagree. I think it's up there with Slanted & Enchanted and Bee Thousand in terms of the best Lo-Fi Indie Rock albums. But it's all personal opinion at the end of the day.

sidewinder 04-15-2010 11:44 AM

Yup, definitely all about personal opinion. I find Slanted & Enchanted much better, and I still haven't ever made it through a full listen of Fee Thousand.

While I like some lo-fi rock, it's not a style I specifically go after. I just like good indie and punk-rooted rock music...lo-fi or not.

GravitySlips 04-17-2010 07:45 PM

III is my favourite Sebadoh record, it's such an intimate and personal record I find, mainly because of the way it's recorded I think. And there's some fun messy tracks on it too, I love it. It's the kinda album I wish I could make.

I'm surprised, Sidewinder, that you've never made it through Bee Thousand. I mean it's full of awesome, catchy songs ... I think it's just one of those albums I love so much I can't quite see how anyone can't enjoy it. Aw well, it's all opinion like ye say.

My opinion verbatim

*except Bubble & Scrape is my favourite

GravitySlips 04-17-2010 09:29 PM

I wish I could've seen Sebadoh play Bubble & Scrape at that ATP Don't Look Back show in London a year or so ago. Brilliant record!

sidewinder 04-17-2010 10:21 PM

I actually happen to be playing III right now. It came on after my Seaweed album and I let it continue. I'm enjoying it more now than on my last listen, different environment and non-headphones so that could have something to do with it. The songs aren't demanding as much of my attention (and therefore the messy tracks are less annoying) then when I was listening to it with headphones walking around the last time.

As for Bee Thousand...it's probably a grower. I might just not have been in the right mood the first time I tried. It's probably something I would enjoy if I gave it the chance.

sidewinder 12-07-2010 05:37 PM

OMG Sebadoh is touring in support of the re-release of Bakesale and Harmacy!!! I will see them February 12.

:tramp:

Violent & Funky 12-07-2010 11:58 PM

Damn. I missed out on Dino Jr. and wanted them to go back on tour... :(

8lackdrag0n 02-11-2011 10:26 PM

didn't they just play the entire Bubble and Scrape at Pitchfork festival?

sidewinder 02-13-2011 02:40 AM

I just saw Sebadoh tonight and they were fucking AWESOME!!!!

So I guess this reunion tour is in support of the re-release of Bakesale and Harmacy, my two favorite albums from them. I think they only played material from those two albums, which was perfect. Don't miss out if they come to your town.

chris521 02-16-2011 01:05 PM

Love Lou Barlow. I live in the same town he grew up in.

I'm trippin hard on nostalgia tonight

This stuff was golden to me years ago, used to listen to it every night to cloud out my reeling thoughts. Even as a kid i knew never to touch that The Shins bullshit.

damn swim you really came with the threads you should post more ****

It was once Barlow's favorite Sebadoh record as well. When I saw them on the Harmacy tour he, almost apologetically, muttered that he felt the band would never top III. I think he was right. Anyway, I'll always give them a chance.
