I think you have to listen to alot of Bright Eyes to realize that his vocals really contribute to his music. Sure, they may be unnerving, shakey and complete off key at times, but there's no denying that he carries alot of emotion in his voice.

And as far as his lyrics go, I think he's a poet in everyway. Sure, some of his songs are full of liberal pseudo-psychological bull****, but not all, not by a long shot...Fevers and Mirrors is a great example of his early songwriting abilities. Many critics hold Birght Eyes in pretty high regards anyways, so it's pretty easy for me to look over the Pitchfork comments.

im not denying that his voice carries a lot of emotion, because it does. it just annoys me after a while because it constantly sounds like hes singing in -30 degree weather. after about 20 minutes of that, it really just kills me.

Maybe I need to listen a little closer, but I first heard the buzz for Bright Eyes, back in 2004, and heard comparisons to Dylan. The first music I heard from him, was so elementary, like a high school kid had written the lyrics. I don't know where those comparisons come from, but I just don't see the fascination...

Saw Conor Oberst at Reading, in fact i was at the front (unfortunately he probably got the smallest crowd at the fest) he came on after Pendulum so i was hot, tired and battered lol (however Pendulum was so much fun and even more chaotic than Rage)

It was alright but I was left a bit disappointed (not cos I was expecting some Bright Eyes material and was denied) the performance just seemed a bit flat. Maybe it was the contrast between the madness of Pendulum to the soft, easy listening nature of Conor.

Anyway new album is great and he played a fantastic bluesy number that was really sitting well with me

I think mainly why i love all of Conor's music, is becuase of how honest all his songs are.

Bright Eyes

Wow.
I was susprised to not find a thread about them on here (if there is one, I missed it).

I discovered them a few months ago, and I've loved them ever since.
Anyone else like 'em?

"Tereza and Thomas" is a ****ing beautiful song.

Conor Oberst obviously does the rusty vocals on purpose. Listen to "Four Winds" and you can hear him sing in his natural voice (which isn't all to bad).
