My Morning Jacket is pretty cool. I especially like the stuff Jim James wrote for Monsters of Folk.

Monsters of Folk = Conor Oberst, Jim James, Mike Mogis, and M. Ward. Good stuff.

Default My Morning Jacket

I haven't listened to these guys for years. Last time I listened to them was a few hard drives ago, when I was just transitioning from Industrial to Extreme Metal as my favorite genre.

So, today I was driving back from Kansas City, and - where else? - while channel surfing on the radio I hear the DJ announce, "....and coming up soon is the new My Morning Jacket song, "Holding Onto Black Metal""

Which marks the first time I've heard the term Black Metal mentioned on the radio. The song is pretty cool, too:

It's a darkness you can't deny
But it don't belong in a grown up mind
Suppose you'll find this place in a youngster's eyes
Coming into life you needn't cry
But as a boy you gotta let it go
Or
You'll find out something is good
Oh black metal you're so misunderstood

Holdin' on to black metal
(Black metal)
Holdin' on to black metal
(Black metal)
Black metal you've been holding on too long

Oh black metal, so misunderstood
Don't turn yourself into Lucifer's fool
Black metal feeds those young, enough is enough
Wants refills out of Lucifer's cup
Black metal lead to and your teenage pop
Look at you starchild you're all grown up

Still holdin' on to black metal
(Black metal)
Still holdin' on to black metal
(Black metal)
Black metal you've been holding on too long

Catch your waves on Lucifer's beach
Taking shade and underneath Lucifer's trees
Getting sustenance from Lucifer's peach
Oh black metal it's a fact in all your speech

Holdin' on to black metal
(Black metal)
Holdin' on to black metal
(Black metal)
Black metal you've been holding on too long

(Black metal)
(Black metal)
Oh bring them to me
(Black metal)
Oh making me think
(Black metal)
Oh one, two, three
Let's rock!

I just saw the video (and heard the song) a few days. I agree, it's good. No wonder the music critic praise the band has been getting for months.

The new album isn't their best work in my opinion. Still very good, but not the same quality of Z.

Over all I'd have to put the band somewhere between pretty good and excellent.

So like Sexalent?

I think ratings should come with warnings. Like if I were giving this album a rating it would be like:

X (warning: rating was given by a miserable ****)

You know, so people would know. Yours would warn people about your hipster tendencies.

Just heard The Waterfall and I guess it's unlikely we'll be getting a new Z any time soon...
I like Like a river though...

I lost all faith in them after Evil Urges. Z seems to have been the exception, not the rule.

Just wow.

Why aren't there more rock bands with two lead guitars?
