Where do you hear up-and-coming Indie/Alternative Bands?

In the tidewater (va) area the place to listen is 96x on friday nights (the late rock show)...it's got a lot of good indie and harder alternative stuff....but i was just wondering where you guys hear it from? (friends, websites, etc)

I'm hoping that people will start recommending bands here for us to listen to. Other than that I don't know where to look besides to other friends for recommendations. The radios around my area aren't very good.

If you want to be all super-elite and OMFG IM SO INDIE IT HURTS, go through the reviews on www.pitchforkmedia.com. You'll get a pretty good education in what's up and coming, as well as some good old stuff that you may not know about. That's the easy way though; I found out about most of the stuff I like by downloading stuff that I'd never heard of before, so that's another way to do it. Independent record label websites are also a good place to start. (There may be some more obscure bands that share a label with one you already like, for example).

I think Independent record labels are the way to go. Truly Indie music is toughest to listen to because you have to actually want to listen to it. It's not gonna pop up on the radio most of the time. You need to go out of your way to listen to it. But in my opinion, all of that is worth its time.

Oh yeah, also, even if you don't have good radio stations in your area, nearly all radio stations have websites where you can stream them. One particularly good out-of-state station that I stream is WFMU in New Jersey, and there are many many many others.
