Recently started listening to Joy Division for real after hearing so much good about them. I'd heard them compared a lot to my favourite band The National I think because of the often baritone vocal style. I don't really think its a good comparison because Joy Division seems very much like an indie-punk/post-punk band and there's totally different things happening. I have to say that I'm really liking the band and right now I'm loving the album Substance. Though still not particularly a fan of the old favourite love will tear us apart.

Maybe my favourite band of all time.
I’ve tried other post-punk or bands that had post-punk elements, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Christian Death, Wire, Bauhaus, The Cure etc. and while many artists are enjoyable in the end (e.g Killing Joke) they can’t touch what Joy Division did. “Closer” in particular is the most melancholic sounding album I’ve ever heard while tracks such as “Means To An End” and “Decades” are definitely some of the most emotion drenched..
(“New Dawn Fades” is pretty damn desperate as well).
I also think “Love Will Tear Us Apart’s” a good track but agree that it’s quite overrated as far as JD go.

What do people think of their more punk rockish “An Ideal For Living’ EP ??

Lowlife or Power Corruption and Lies. IMO these represent NO at their peak. They both offer a combination of "guitar" songs and electronic ones. Yet they both are cohesive as albums, awesome ones at that!

hate New Order, but Joy Division is cool.

I like the "An Ideal For Living" EP as well. Not as much as the Warsaw album, but yeah.

Wasn't Joy Division the first band to really capitalize on the drums and bass by using them as lead instruments. Look at how many bands that are doing that right now, Beach House, Screaming Females, Interpol, The National etc. Goes to show how important and influential this band was.

Joy Division is amazing. Substance, though a compilation, is one of my favorite albums of all time. Primarily for containing their early masterpieces(Transmission being the prime example). Closer and UP are both excellent albums as well, not sure which one I prefer. I find Closer to be far more consistent, but Pleasures definitely has the best tracks.
