'Closer' is one of the most boring, dull albums I have ever heard in my life.

I rarely felt that the music was progressing in any way, shape or form. I know that that is not always typical of the style of music, but I was just waiting for this record to come alive and it never did.
It also seemed almost too long, I gave it a full play through, and was tempted to just turn it off and listen to something else after about the fifth or sixth track.
I persevered, but there was nothing to ignite my interest.

Just an opinion mind you, but I just didn't like the album at all.

Oh man, Closer is one of my favorites. I can see why you consider it monotonous, but that is just because of the minimalistic rythm driven style of JD. I find the first six tracks on the album to be incredible, with a little bit of emphasis on Heart and Soul and a whole lotta emphasis on Isolation.

The album is pretty much summed up with the opening track in terms of style and feel. If you are capable of enjoying it, than I would recommend giving the album another try.

great band, getting better all the time.
what drugs are you on?

how could they be "getting better" when they're no more?

Presumably, he means they're getting better to him personally.

Love Joy Division but never really felt Closer. Giving it a good listen now.

Closer is an amazing album. It is very depressing and it pretty much feels like you are listening to Ian's suicide note. But everything about it feels so genuinely emotional, it feels more open and honest than Unknown Pleasures, almost like you are staring directly into Ian's troubled soul.

The austerity, tension, and claustrophobic tone of Closer makes it a fantastic record, in my opinion. It has a real haunting quality, and the songs are beautifully crafted. The sound is more nuanced and fuller than Unknown Pleasures, and the sombre feel of the whole thing draws me in completely. Do I prefer it to their debut? Probably, yes.
