I have Leaves Turn Inside You and enjoy it quite a bit, but I havent listened to anything else by them.

I'm not partial to any favorite album either, though was Repetition was my first album by theirs. Also, one of the best concerts I've ever seen featured them as the headliner & Blond Redhead as the opening act in 1996. They were brutal & it was obvious they had total contempt for the audience, but I think that only helped build the tension for their scathing music.

I am totally jealous. I'd love to have seen them in that era (or any), that was just when Repetition was released which is overall probably my favourite album of theirs. Blonde Redhead as well are great live, although I saw them in 2007, not 1996. I remember reading that Unwound were basically the members of Blonde Redhead's favourite band as well, which is awesome.

Listening to New Plastic Ideas just now...really great album, mixing their more hardcore stuff, with a dreamy and more sparse sound.

I was very impressed with this album. It reminded me of Fugazi. Not neccessarily musically but compositionally. Any recommendations with similar sounding bands gratefully recieved.

GravitySlips 03-20-2008 05:12 PM

what album did you hear?

I think the most obvious comparisons are to Sonic Youth and Fugazi, so those respective bands' main albums are worth listening to if you haven't already.

bands you might enjoy if you haven't heard them:

Polvo, June of 44, Rodan, Drive Like Jehu, Moss Icon, Native Nod, Rites of Spring, Squirrel Bait, Nation of Ulysses...

I don't know if you're familiar with any early emo music, but a lot of that is similar to some of Unwound's work, and is a worthwhile listen. It's not for everybody, but it is more accessible than "screamo". A lot of the time it's just a more intimate and experimental take on 80s hardcore punk

Of course my main suggestion is if you enjoyed whatever Unwound album you listened to, then go listen to the rest cuz they're all boss :)

Considering I like Nation Of Ulysses , Rites Of Spring , Drive Like Jehu and have recently checked out June Of 44 I should probably check this lot out.

The album was Repetition.

tHANKS - not too often that I have a live music experience that would make someone jealous. I'm usually in awe of bands that people saw in the 70's & 80's when I was too young to go out to live shows.

Blonde Redhead were even more intense by the way - a very memorable moment was when the lead singer / guitarist forced himself on the bassist against a wall & was pushing her as their guitars were screwing one another.

Just finished up "Leaves Turn Inside You". This album is nothing short of amazing. After listening to the album I had to sit in silence for a moment and try to figure out what the hell just happened. I'll be picking up Repetition next.
