Default My local scene (Calgary)

Up here in Calgary we have a pretty interesting scene. There is a surprisingly large amount of post punk influences and a lot of local bands are taking a lot from the 90s experimental lo fi rock sound. I really like my scene and have been going to a lot of local shows. Its also quite surprising how everyone going and playing at local shows are mostly around my age (17) and how professional some of these bands can sound despite being so young. Its fun being involved and I get a chance to create artwork for bands and things as well.

My favorite local band would definitely be friendo. They are a minimalistic kind of spacey sounding band and tap into some sonic youth esque sound landscape at times. Their album cold toads is one of my favorites ever.

A quite refined band especially considering all members are friends of friends going to a high school a few blocks from mine who do all their own recording. Not the most original music Ive ever heard but has some pop polish and charm behind the indie rock sound.

Featuring a member from friendo is a really nice poppish lo-fi sound. Jocko Nacho and Tarnation are incredibly infectious.

So tell me what you guys think? Quality stuff or not so much?

It's a shame you were too young to go see a Smalls show when they were still around. Technically they were from Edmonton but they had a pretty strong presence in Calgary. Could you do me a favor perhaps? Next time you find yourself at one of the independent record stores could you ask the people working there if they knew what ever became of The Interpestuals? I'd really appreciate it.

Yeah definitely should be interesting. There are older folk sprinkled throughout the shows I am sure they would have an idea.
