Everyone should give Emancipator a listen. He produces pure gold in my opinion.

ILYA's - Poise Is the Greater Architect, slightly more consistent than most trip-hop I've heard

I've been listening to trip hop since it's earliest days and I've provided a list of significant trip hop releases in chronological order.

Trip hop is a fusion of various musical styles therefore it's a very subjective genre of music. It's problematic placing most artists within the trip hop genre because many groups have disavowed the trip hop genre. Trip hop has diverse elements of funk, R&B, dub, ambient, lounge, world beat, house blended with electronic music.

Some people will disagree with my choice of artists but like the dub-step genre, bands fitting within the trip hop genre are often a matter of academic argument. I generally use my ears to settle such matters. From my perspective, Stereolab sounds more like a trip hop band than Krautrock band, but I'm courting controversy with that analysis.

The term was originally used to describe a form of music being played in Bristol England and the early Ninties, which was identified with two groups, Portishead & Massive Attack. British hip hop singer Neneh Cherry played a large roll in bankrolling & promoting the earliest recordings of both Portishead & Massive Attack.

Trip hop has endured 20 years but never really broken through to the mainstream. It remains a musical genre that remains largely experimental, however trip hop has maintained a steady cult following. At this point, trip hop remains largely a UK phenomenon.

I loooove Hooverphonic and Olive. Thank you for this list, I will definitely check some of the artists I don't know. It's funny, I've also been listening to this genre for a long time and I never realized Ivy, Morcheeba, Waldeck, Massive Attack, Goldfrapp, Olive, and Hooverphonic were parts of the same genre. Brilliant.

I guess this is kinda the genre of my teenager years, and I didn't even know it had a name. Strange.

Just wondering....you wouldn't consider the Gorillaz Trip Hop?
