Scotland's Postcard Records

As far as I can tell this documentary never got released, it's been on the Tube from time ago...
anybody into the old Postcard label stuff? Orange Juice, Josef K, Fire Engines...?
Apart from Franz Ferdinand ripping off Edwyn Collins' act it seems to have been a pretty influential label, like Rough Trade in the UK, but a bit less bogged down in the aesthetics of punk .
Somebody should do a compilation...

That was pretty interesting shame it wasn't longer.

I don't mind the stuff that came on Postcard , I find the main problem with it was there wasn't much in the way of diversity and the bands all sound typical of the early 80s.

Basically you pick up a Postcard album & you know what you're going to get.

i see what you mean but everybody should at least own the Glasgow School, which compiles Orange Juice's early stuff...they were just compositional geniuses. It was before they went in for the generic 80's pop production...and it sounds so impromptu and emotionally heartfelt...you can hear it in modern bands

There was so much diversity (in the UK alone) back then, so much ambition in the wake of punk's deconstruction of music...what have we got now? *grumble grumble*

The Glasgow School is really good. I only know the three bands you mentioned, Orange Juice, Josef K and the Fire Engines, but they're all great.

I picked up a decent Scottish music compilation last year - 'Thank You For Being You' (Electric Honey Records) - it's mainly Scottish indie stuff from various local labels (Postcard, Pema, Chemikal Underground etc.) and has some great tracks by bands such as The Pastels, Belle And Sebastian, The Delgados, Teenage Fanclub and Josef K. It's worth checking out (if you haven't already...).

The Pastels are very good. Especially their 90's stuff. Orange Juice and Fire Engines too. Scottish post-punk in general was very strong.

^ Reminds me, I've got a Pastels album somewhere around. Should probably give it a spin again sometime.

I'm not over-familiar with Postcard's bands - Josef K, the Fire Engines and Orange Juice are great bands from what I've heard, and well worth looking into. I'm pretty sure Aztec Camera started on Postcard, so they'd probably be my favourite of the bunch.

I'm listening to The Glasgow School just now, I really love it. Amazing catchy pop songs with lovely jangly guitars and Edwyn Collins' voice is great too. I'd sayit's even better than I remember it being.

does anyone have any other Postcard albums from bands that weren't Orange Juice, JOsef K and the Fire Engines? I'd like to hear more of this stuff, I'm right in the mood.

I love The Glasgow School compilation. Orange Juices' You Can't Hide It Forever and Rip It Up are pretty great also.
