Anyone heard these guys? Their new album "Visiter" just came out and it's absolutely fantastic, I cant get passed the opening track entitled "walking"... its beautiful, just wish it was longer... although it somewhat flows into the next track "red and purple", which is equally as stunning. I actually think I like this album better than their debut.

adidasss 04-11-2008 05:00 PM

They have another album? I thought this was their debut.

Anyhoo, as I said in another thread, not too impressed. :\

that one dude 04-11-2008 05:40 PM

yeah, it's called "beware of the maniacs"... but at the time they went by the name Dodo Bird.

Rainard Jalen 04-12-2008 04:30 AM

In a year of so far mostly disappointing Pitchfork bests, this is the most impressive by a walk imo. Next comes Hercules & Love Affair with Beach House: Devotion at third.

Yo adidasss, did you ever check out Plants & Animals?

adidasss 04-12-2008 04:37 AM

No, wha's tha'?http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...wer/glupan.gif

They had a new album out earlier this year called Parc Avenue, I'd be interested to see what you think of it. It has a lot of really good tracks on it. Whilst they're not all winners, I'm pretty sure you'd like most of it quite a bit. Especially the first 5 tracks.

adidasss 04-12-2008 06:34 AM

K. I'll check it oot. You should make a thread about bands/albums that catch your attention you know...;)

Farfisa 04-17-2008 07:14 PM

I think Beware of the Maniacs is a tad better then their latest album.

bsmix 06-27-2008 10:03 PM

I'm starting to really get into the whole album. Red and Purple has been my fav song off this for a while. But there are alot that I'm digging now Eyelids, Joe's Waltz, Winter, Park Song, Jodi, and God?

Rainard Jalen 06-27-2008 11:17 PM

The album has a lot of depth, it is far from being a write-off. Musically rich and vast, full of well-executed ideas.

I just love the song Red and Purple, but the rest of "Visiters" falls to monotony.

bsmix 06-28-2008 10:10 AM

It took me quite a while before I got into the whole thing. The songs are all alittle similar but I think the best part is the singing. After a few listens the whole way through I was singin along with all of them.

I'm in love with Visiter at the moment. Such a beautifully warm, measured album. One of my favourites in the indie-folk category

Dodos plainly have a lot of good ideas, but the execution is often wanting. While some songs are near perfect, others are so blandly conceived that they bore you to death - in spite of the soundness of the basic idea.

I will say that I expect this band to come up with some stellar releases in the future. Visiter, though, was about half hit, half miss. I tried to view it more positively so many times, but it turns out to be impossible. It stumbles all too frequently.

Ashley and Undeclared are perfect but the whole album is really good.

that one dude 03-12-2009 05:56 PM

I started listening to this album again on repeat like I did when I first picked it up. "Paint the Rust" has become my favorite at the moment.

simplephysics 03-15-2009 04:54 PM

I really liked Visiter, the drumming in particular.

Man, I am in the same boat. I am in LOVE with these guys. His voice is so beautiful, he reminds me a bit of Sondre Lerche. Why is walking so short? It;s like when Up Against the Wall (PB &J) ends, I want MOOOORE!! THese guys effing rock.

Farfisa 06-10-2009 04:20 PM

"Visiter" is nice and all but, alot of people seem to have only heard their most recent release. I can pretty much listen to "Beware of the Maniacs" in it's entirety unlike "Visitor" which I pretty much just skip through to the very last tracks.

rebkranz 06-10-2009 05:57 PM

that's next on my listening schedule, thanks!

It's interesting reading which songs reach different people. We seem to be at the common consensus that some songs are good, and the rest of the album seems to be rather dull. Yet, when you look at all of the individual songs named - we rarely get a repeat. I think an interesting study would be to describe what we like about the songs of which we are name dropping. Anyone?

Personally, I downloaded the album a while ago and never thought it was anything special. I preferred Hercules and the Love Affair over the Dodos in this wave of new artists.

simplephysics 06-12-2009 09:53 AM

I think Visiter is a fantastic album.. the drumming in particular sets them apart from a typical indie folk outfit.

I completely agree. He uses the guitar as a drum, or for rhythm a lot, and it's really different. He said he tried to figure out this technique after taking an African drum course. I thought Ashley was awesome, the haunting melody with that drum beat and the great sound effects they use. Walking has an awesome melody, and it changes like, halfway through. I love every song on this album!

Sneer 06-13-2009 05:29 AM

It is a good album, but i dont feel compelled to listen to it that much.

gogojessicat 04-06-2010 10:51 PM

These guys are on tour right now. Anyone planning on going? Anyone seen them live already?

Deakin18 02-01-2011 09:39 PM

Just got into The Dodos a few days ago, and I really like what i have heard from them so far. There new album: No Color comes out March 15th, so yeah. I really love the song The Strums, so far that is my fav song of theirs.
