Silver Jews
They're really connected member wise but I don't feel like getting into who was in them or any of that because I think they're popular enough now to stand on their own. David Berman is an incredible lyricist and American Water is a masterpiece.
Their new album is a step up from Tanglewood Numbers but none of it really touches the earlier albums. a friend introduced me to them, sending me 'lookout mountain, lookout sea', which is totally carried by Berman's lyrics. Everybody I've played 'san francisco B.C.' too just laps it up.
Personally 'american water' was not such a pleasure for me, a bit too Malkmus-esque. Still you can't argue with titles like 'honk if you're lonely'... |
I love Silver Jews. As you pointed out, David Berman is an absolutely amazing songwriter. My personal favorites off American Water are Random Rules (one of the best songs ever written), Blue Arrangements, and The Wild Kindness. Everything else is great to, not one bad track on the whole album. Stephen Malkmus + David Berman= Mind blowing talent.
and nice user title, sleepy jack fire drill...Pixies are one of my favorite bands. |

mindblowingly good lyrics on occasion. very cool band. |
Malkmus is legend. American Water is pretty much essential.
|
American Water has some of the best lyrics I've ever heard.

I have "American Water" and yeah, it's a phenomenal album. The thing that catches my ear the most would probably have to be the lyrics, I mean they are some of the best I've heard.
