Cast Appreciation Thread

Now for those of you who dont even know who they are. They were a Indie band from Liverpool during the 1990s and were part of what the media labelled 'Britpop'. They were lead by the ex bassist (John Power) of The La's (another early 90s indie band from Liverpool).
I first came across Cast about 4 years ago where I did a blind purchase on amazon marketplace for their 'All Change' album. I was blown away by it the first time I heard it. I have since gotten all their other albums 'Mother Nature Calls', 'Magic Hour' & 'Beetroot'. I also bought this guys Cast singles collection from ebay last year and I got a lot of their singles with live rare recordings of 'Alright' & 'Back Of My Mind'.
I know they arent exactly the greatest band of all time and can totally understand why people wouldnt like them or dismiss them as being bland or dull etc etc. They are just a pretty straightforward original sounding British Indie rock band & to me it is British Indie rock at its best.
I have also gotten all of John Powers albums which are not bad but nothing special (IMO). 'Happening For Love' is probably the best one with proper length tracks unlike the other two 'Willow She Weeps' is very good as well.
I had high hopes for 'Stormbreaker' and bought it but it just has an unfinished feel to it with most of the songs not more than 2 mins long.
Anyway anybody who likes them/dislikes them for whatever reason I would like to hear from you.

Saw these live at the Apollo Manchester yonks ago.
Decent drummer who thought he was Keith Moon, but the jingly jangly scouse pop was too rich for my veins. One or two good tracks and they could have been loads better than they actually were.

I think they were pretty damn awful generic pap personally. Why bands like this got the success they did and the masterful Teenage Fanclub were generally ignored by the populace defies belief.

post/recommend some of their music please?

I thought that Cast didnt really get enough recognition but I see what your saying, as for Teenage Fanclub Ive heard of them will maybe check them out. As for the 'goods bands' getting ignored comment that happens all the time but all it does for me is makes me appreciate them even more.

Yeah I totally understand what your saying, It's like I know there not as great as I think they are but theres something about them that just clicks inside me when I heard them (if that makes sense..). Also I envy you for getting to see them live. I just think they had a real classy sound to them. As for the drummer I aint got a clue..

eh All Change album is the best one they did and the first I heard which subsequently got me into them, should be pretty easy to find on either download or amazon for pennies. As for the other stuff it aint a patch on the All Change album but it kinda grows on you after a while.

If it's any consolation (although I know it won't be seeing as you'll never get the chance) they were a great live band.
I'll even go as far as to say they were one of the best bands I've seen live of that calibre. In that their onstage sound came across better than their studio stuff.
I got dragged along by the missus to the gig (she tends to do this to me frequently and still does. Usually at my expense :( )
Although I'm not a fan of Cast and never was, nor will be, I had to admit they were pretty impressive live.

Like Jackhammer said it's all about teenage fanclub really.
The only time I broke the awkward silence with my aspiring social-climber boss at my last job was when he talked about how he met Cast in America and ended up touring with them. Cool or what? They are another 90's band I need an album by, along with the mighty Dodgy :D

Yeah well Ive seen a few live videos on Youtube and they looked really surprisingly good live. Its always a great feeling to find out that a band is great (or better) live than on record. It sort of cements the belief that they are great in your mind. Like for instance I used to be really into Red Hot Chili Peppers until i got their supposedly 'great' Live @ Slane Castle dvd which I thought was awful. Live they cant match the energy they do on record and my opinion of them totally changed when i saw the dvd.
P.s. In response to your gig problem- I suggest you invest in a lockable wallet.

Just have to agree. All change for me is one of the top rock records of the 90s.
