Don`t You Just Hate It When ......

You ask people to recommend new bands that you might like & all they can come up with is bands that have been around for years or whatever happens to be flavour of the month at that moment.

Whatever happened to individuality. I`d love to get into some new bands , bands that are doing something different, of any genre .Pushing the boundaries of what music can be,bands who use music as art rather than just trying to flog their product to 15 year old emo kids.

But I have a feeling I won`t hear that. I swear MTV was the worst thing ever to happen in music.

TheBig3 01-23-2005 04:47 PM

Wanna put up an example so we know what your talking about?

David Frost 01-23-2005 05:02 PM

sissy spacek
black eyes
Pelican
LA QUIETE
Xiu Xiu
Do Make Say Think

jibber 01-23-2005 07:13 PM

meh, yeah mtv sucks if you want to hear anything new, but that's old news. Check the recomend a new band thread, yeah a lot of the bands listed have been around for a very long time, but you might see something you haven't heard yet.

blackTshirt 01-24-2005 12:59 AM

no, i hate it when people start talking about the 10000 bands that you don't know and that you probably won't hear of very soon.

Yeah but that way you'll probably find something new that you havent heard of before. Theres not so many ways to find new music now.

Sweet Jane 01-24-2005 12:21 PM

Xiu xiu (Experimental rock)
Do make say think (Just listen)
A silver mt zion (Godspeed side project)
Sons and Daughters (Really dark bluesy rock)
Efterklang (Also pretty experimental)
Iron and Wine (Lo-fi acoustic stuff)
Sunn o))) (I think they're new, bit difficult to get into at first)
The Go! Team (The reason I get up in the morning)

I sense that may have been a sarcastic post, but in any case, there's plenty of ways to find new music now, with the abundance of music channels, music magazines, radio shows, file sharing programmes and music chatrooms.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 01-24-2005 12:27 PM

Nope, not sarcastic, just that there's loads of bands who wont get a mention in magazines or get aired on tv or radio.. But yeah youve got music chatrooms and stuff, but thats my point; its still someone else telling you about the band.

Sweet Jane 01-24-2005 12:37 PM

Sorry, I meant the BlackT-shirt post that you quoted, not your own.

And I thought that for ages, none of the music I liked seemed to get mentioned anywhere. Turns out every band that gigs outside of their own bedrooms gets a mention somewhere, just look for less mainstream magazines and you'll start to notice it more. And God bless the internet.

MUSE girl 01-24-2005 12:42 PM

i no bands that are pretty big in my area, but like if i mention them in here, people will be like who the feck are they?!!!

Sweet Jane 01-24-2005 12:49 PM

Go for it, if they're good then thats what people want

MUSE girl 01-24-2005 12:53 PM

there called Akira dawn, fecking amazing band!

Fenixpunk 01-24-2005 12:59 PM

ive got links to some local az bands on my geocities page along with some mp3s from them, Discriminados are from El Centro California, but they are friends of mine that i went to high school with and are really good (reminds me of naked aggression) so there is a link to them as well, they are playing tomorrow (1-25)in Yuma, AZ (I will be there!!) with ISKRA which is an awesome and extremely heavy band.

MUSE girl 01-24-2005 01:04 PM

sound! i love going to gigs where i live, cuz like the people you are watching are always my mates so its pretty damn wicked!

sons and daughters and the go! team are brilliant bands.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-24-2005 03:45 PM

Ok here`s the point.

In my opinion with any genre you get maybe a handful of bands that are any good , the rest tend to be hundreds of soundalike bands that add nothing new.
You ask people to recommend stuff & 9 times out of 10 they`ll just give you a list of bands from the genre they listen to that are basically also-rans.I`ve met very few people who like to listen to original music regardless of genre, as I do.
I just think it`s a shame when in the age of filesharing people limit themselves to one or two genres.
Thank you for the recommendations , I`ve heard of most of them already but I`ll check out some of the others.

I'm not sure how you got that from this thread... it doesn't exactly tell you what type of music people listen to. You asked about new music, and certain genres are churning out more new bands than others. I'm sure no-one is that limiting with themselves, you like what you like.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-24-2005 04:33 PM

I mean in general , not this thread

Sweet Jane 01-24-2005 04:36 PM

My mistake, in that case I guess some people do, seeing as I seen a poll on metal being the best genre, with no other options.

RedEye 01-24-2005 04:41 PM

Check out Noxagt (Dirty Three meets Jah Wobble on speed) or Supersilent (mental jazz-improv). OK the latter have done 6 albums but most people don't know them!

hookers with machineguns 05-25-2005 12:00 AM

Here's a few I've been listening to

TV on the Radio
Mercury Rev
Victory At Sea
Blonde Redhead
Trembling Blue Stars
Shellac
Broken Social Scene (don't get thrown off my cheesy name)
AM/FM
Xiu Xiu
Deerhoof
The Silent League

Funny you should say that , somebody had been telling me about them for ages & the name put me off , then about 6 months ago I gave in & got the album & it`s really good.

hookers with machineguns 05-25-2005 01:26 AM

Yeah, they're a perfect example of a great band with a terrible name. All I know is, somewhere there's an angst-filled nu metal outfit that is very disappointed that the name is already taken.

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-25-2005 02:37 AM

I had them down as a ****ty emo band myself

Sneer 05-25-2005 11:15 AM

No way... I did exactly the same thing as you and Hookers. The name pissed me off so I didn't wanna go see them, then I eventually heard the album and kicked myself. Hard.

I have been listening to

The Apples in Stereo
The Engineers
Holly Golightly
Deerhoof
Shellac
Patrick Wolf
Nurse With Wound
Papa M
Juana Molina
Six Organs of Admittance
Coco Rosie
Jandek
Maher Shalal Hash Baz
and Orange Juice, for nostalgia
