Girls
Pitchfork: Album Reviews: Girls: Album
Anyone care to comment on Album's inclusion in the 2009 pantheon of + 9.0 albums alongside Grizzly Bear, Dirty projectors and Animal Collective? Another Pitchfork controversy? http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ower/shock.jpg Sample song |
While I tend to hate Pitchfork and hardly ever agree with their album reviews, I actually liked the song you posted and I am actually going to by Album now, because this is exactly my kind of music, bouncy, sunshiny indie-pop with a slight lo-fi feel. However I don't know where pitchfork get's off ranking Animal Collective and Dirty Projectors with a 9.0, because the new Animal Collective isn't nearly as good as Feels or Strawberry Jam, it isn't memorable at all with songs that never actually stuck with me and while the Dirty Projectors album is good, it certainly doesn't deserve a 9.0 +.

Anyone have a link? i really liked that song.

I'm listening right now... I like their 'vibe'.

Lust for Life took some getting use to but I really like how it progressed. It had pretty much everything I like to hear in a song, although I can't say I'm huge on the vocals. I'll be checking this one out, what Pitchfork thinks is irrelevant to me anyways, they gave Eskimo Snow a 6.9. :|

i like the buftie boys' speedo thingies...
EDIT: i cant say g ay apparently |
What? Pitchfork gave this over a 9? I really liked it, but I didn't they'd give it a best new music. I saw Embryonic was in that club, which I agree with. But there's no way Girls is on par with that. I'd be really interested in seeing how they do their ratings, I sometimes wonder if they throw a dart to determine a score between 6 and 9 for some things. Like, I noticed Memory Tapes and Warm Heart of Africa. Now don't get me wrong, I posted both of those a while ago and they're good, but there's no way in hell they deserves a best new music. According to the number of albums that get that, that means those are pretty much their top 25 of the year.
EDIT: And sorry asshat, I gotta disagree with you. Farm, Cathedral with No Eyes, Embryonic, A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Wind's Poem, and maybe Earthly Delights certainly deserve a 9 on their rating scale, but that's all I can think of right now. None of the stuff they gave it to. |

it's garbage, plain and simple. if pitchfork hadn't said it was great most lemmings here wouldn't give it the time of day. come on, guys, you know this is crap.
|
I finally gave it a listen and I think it's actually a good album. I wouldn't have given it 9, but there's a very good chance I'll end up listening to this album on a semi regular basis.
|
i got hold of this album the other day, really disappointed. Lust For Life is ok (although it does start to bore after a couple of listens) but the album as a whole is MASSIVELY overrated, variation between songs is minimal, there's only so much of a formula you can do before it becomes tiresome and grating. 9.0+? Fuck that.

I'm really on the fence about this band. My co-workers play their album, Album, all the time so it's grown on me slowly but I don't think that I would ever buy it. In terms of longevity, while they've seemingly "blow up" in the blogospehere, I really don't see them growing and continuing past a second album. I was watching this live clip from their recent show in Barcelona and it only confirms my suspicions that there's nothing too remarkable about them.
|
They've released a new video for Lust For Life that is hardcore *** porn.
EDIT: Gay is censored...? |
yeah, the video is just garbage too. I really think this is one of those bands that people will convince themselves to like just because PF gave them a good review. I mean, they really are crappy. For once in the short time I have been on this forum I agree with Stu about something.

Stop bitching about Pitchfork, musicbanter.

though i did hear they wanted to do a more explicit version, the record company forbade them from releasing it. |

Apart from Lust For Life nothing else has really grabbed my attention yet.

Morning light is a pretty tight song, the vocals on that especially. the whole album is kind of "emo", but i really liked it.

Bump. Let's remember one of the best indie bands of the new millennium.
While their debut Album wasn't love at first sight for me, Father, Son, Holy Ghost was and is for me one of the best albums of the past decade. One of the highlights: I can't put my finger on their sound, but what it seems to convey is a lovelorn melancholy that puts Ryan Adams to shame. My Pitchforkian assessment of their short discography: Album - 8.2/10 Broken Dreams Club - 7.3/10 Father, Son, Holy Ghost - 9.2/10 They went out at the height of their game. Unfortunately Owens never seems to have managed to reach those heights again through his other projects. |
