Pomplamoose

Anyone else heard of them/ like them? I love them.

Pomplamoose is made up of boyfriend and girlfriend Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn. They were made famous by their video songs on YouTube, however have now produced an album and are beginning to tour.

...and I LOVE this:

hey it's the viral Electro Harmonix duo again, at least that's where i've seen them the most. as spammy as some of their videos can be (depending on how you feel about non-stop product placement) it's cool to know they're trying to do something more than promote awesome effect pedals.

I wasn't aware of their video spammy-ness or product placement :S Their album was given to me by a friend of mine, and I liked it a lot so I looked them up and bam! I didn't know they were that much of an internet sensation.

Anyway yeah, I think they're pretty cool. The girl, Nataly Dawn, started off doing solo stuff before she collaborated with her boyfriend and her solo stuff is a lot less... annoying so to speak, if people tend to find them annoying.

But if anyone is into quirky little musical bits and pieces like these they should definitely check them out!

mr dave 12-08-2009 02:45 AM

it's all good. they're top notch at what they do. the Beyonce cover clip is the one i'm most familiar with.

even if it is viral marketing - it's done right. the clip shows the products in actual practical use and do a great job of it. especially when most other effect company demos involve some has-been playing a few random riffs and licks on a guitar then mumbling about settings hehehe.

heck, more companies should spam this way hehehe

Sneer 12-08-2009 10:45 AM

They remind me of Viva Voce in some apects of their music, and no not just because they're a male-female duo in a relationship. Good stuff.

Thrice 01-12-2010 10:10 PM

I dig it. Im more of a fan of Conte by himself. Actually, Im more of a fan of staring at all his equipment and instruments in envy. I never realized that they did that Beyonce song.

Astronomer 01-12-2010 11:45 PM

^ That's pretty sweet, I'd never actually seen/ heard anything by Conte solo! Awesome stuff. And yeah I totally know what you mean re: the equipment jealousy.

True, heres a couple more to check out!

Astronomer 01-13-2010 12:05 AM

Thanks, those were great! Have totally subscribed to his YouTube channel.

Thrice 01-13-2010 12:21 AM

Me too, I listened to him a while about a year and a half ago, but saw he did a cover of Feel Good INC by the Gorillaz a little earlier today and have been whoring it up ever sense.

MoonlitSunshine 12-03-2010 06:36 AM

Reviving this thread cause I just remembered about them, and anyone who hasn't heard these guys really should. Like, Now.

In terms of their of their covers, I gotta say that I think their cover of "Telephone" is by far the most fantastic:

In terms of their Solo Stuff, I found Nataly's stuff not that enjoyable, tbh. Jack's stuff is awesome, cause it's so ridiculously eclectic and all over the place, and I love how he brings that depth to Pomplamoose. That and the fact that his music just has an oomph to it... you know that difference, between someone strumming a guitar, and the person who's really making a tune? Yeah.

Left to her own devices, Nataly seems to be just yet another singer/songwriter with a guitar, which is disappointing, cause she has a wonderful voice, and evidently the ability to be so much more than that. But! That's what Pomplamoose is for! If you're looking for something upbeat, quirky, and happy, but with depth, definite musical ability and the most crazy mix of instruments possible, then this is definitely a pair you should listen to!

This sort of stuff burns my insides. From what I've heard of them, this is all that I hate about indie music.

As a small preamble, I read an article once that asked what this generation/fad would give to coming generations. The line that stuck with me is "with so much Retro going on its a wonder what they could possibly give. You can't pass on 'remembering.'"

Thats my issue with this stuff. She sings like a record played in 1942. With all due respect to the FDR administration, I'm glad it isn't 1942. At least Taco had the balls to be upfront about what he was doing.

This is where I see a massive divide in the movement and I bitched about it in the Hipsters thread. A lot of great indie reaches back and takes lessons from older music and merges it with, depending on the artist, the 1980's underground. But what we're seeing here is a replication. This is museum music. I don't think this is any different than the swing movement, except Williamsburg didn't jack any styles from a half century ago.

I can't find the words to put it into succinct phrases, but half of indie, the sort of decommercialized portion for lack of a better term, appears to go back to Lightning Hopkins, Woody Guthrie, and Joy Division and reads their notes and their play book, the other half, this pomplamoose half as it were, seems to take the music without layers. Its all the up-front-image of the thing. Theres no mechanics to it.

If I can try for a late-game hail-mary description, some bands learn how to build a car, and some bands can tell you what the exterior looks like.

Kaimon 12-04-2010 01:35 AM

^I can kinda see where you're coming from, and I'd probably agree with some of it when it comes to Pomplamoose or Nataly's music. Maybe you'd like Conte's solo stuff more then?

IDK. Worth a shot. Because at the very least, this guy definitely has talent, and I doubt that you'd find this in the same category of "museum music" as you placed Pomplamoose's music. Hopefully.

Or something.

(This was just an excuse to post some Jack.)

Astronomer 12-04-2010 01:56 AM

^ Agreed. I absolutely love Conte and his music which is initially what drew me to Pomplamoose but I definitely prefer his own stuff... Jack Conte > Nataly Dawn.

:stupid:

and that's the difference between mainstream music and indie music?
so mainstream music has never copied style or had influences of any kind?
wow how could we all be so... blind.

CanwllCorfe 12-05-2010 09:07 PM

Oh god it's them

bonesaw-orchestra 12-10-2010 10:25 PM

Pomplamoose are awesome. I find them as a duo endearing. I didn't know they both did solo stuff, I'll have to check them out.

DoctorSoft 12-12-2010 10:59 AM

There covers are kind of interesting but goddamn, that girl has to have the blandest, most uninteresting voice I've ever heard.

LOOK AT US WE USE TISSUE BOXES FOR DRUMS. WERE SO INDIE-COOL AND QUIRKY. - Pomplamoose

Lazarus Walks!

sleepy jack 12-19-2010 05:09 PM

I prefer to be called Jesus when referencing my biblical return from the dead, but of course, this being the indie forum, you had to go with Lazarus. Fucking hipster

[Royal Tenenbaum] 12-21-2010 02:08 AM

I love the band :D They're awesome.

Laurent Quinn Proper 12-22-2010 06:09 AM

She's totally related to Justin Beiber. They're ****ing identical.

[Royal Tenenbaum] 12-22-2010 10:52 PM

I think she's gorgeous :D

sleepy jack 12-23-2010 01:36 AM

I like how you don't deny the Justin Bieber similarity, pedophile.
