I only got Doin' The ****roach when I saw them. That said I did get 5 Moon & Antartica tracks, so happy enough.

8lackdrag0n 02-11-2011 10:29 PM

Trailer Trash is my favorite MM song.

debaserr 02-11-2011 11:02 PM

check out my modest mouse compilation if you are new(or not familiar with all of their stuff).

Here

Modest Mouse is golden. The first thing I ever heard from them was WWDBTSES but I've got to say the farther back you go the more you've got to love this band. Long Drive is probably my favourite album from them.

Thats how it was for me except I started with Good News. Now they are permanantly imbeded in my idea of good music.

I only have "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank", which I know is coming to the party a tad late, but I love it.
Float on would be my favorite song of theirs, next to Fire It Up.

Cool. Those are two awesome songs. If you like those ones, I would recommend even just downloading some of their older stuff and giving it a listen. I think you'll notice a difference between WWD and anything before it.

I would recommend these songs as first steps:

Ocean Breathes Salty, Gravity Rides Everything, Dramamine, Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes

Sneer 02-21-2011 05:28 PM

MM are victims of their own success I think. Their first three albums; This is a Long Drive..., The Lonesome Crowded West and Moon & Antarctica are absolutely superb. They just havent been able to release anything that matches up to those three since. Granted, the likes of WWDBTSS and Good news... still piss on the majority of albums being churned out over the last few years, but there is an indication of a gradual decline, which is a shame because I do think they're a great band - and they're incredible live.

ThePhanastasio 02-21-2011 06:10 PM

The Moon & Antarctica is probably my favorite album by MM, but I still really like Good News For People Who Love Bad News. A lot of people seem to dislike that album, particularly those who are fans of the band's earlier work, but I really dig it.

debaserr 02-22-2011 12:57 AM

it's an excellent album. the problem is that the ones prior are fucking brilliant.

Mr November 02-22-2011 10:32 AM

The earlier stuff is my favourite and in my opinion better. But I would argue that it's less commercially accessible.

On April 28, 2011, Big Boi said via twitter that he had been in the studio with Modest Mouse working with them on their next LP.
lolwut...

at least we know they are working on it.

elmtree 05-20-2011 01:15 PM

Big Boi?! Do not know of him, but am guessing by the spelling of "boy" that he is a rapper?
Modest rocks. Hands down my favorite group. Would be nice to hear some new stuff. Their latest EP didn't do too much for me, but King Rat is a jammin tune!

debaserr 05-20-2011 01:22 PM

I hope he was helping as a producer. My head might explode if I hear someone rapping to Modest Mouse.

elmtree 05-20-2011 01:33 PM

Agreed! We will probably be hearing about a new album for years before it finally comes out.

debaserr 06-02-2011 01:04 AM

Two new songs

VeggieLover 06-02-2011 11:54 PM

Honestly, I'd only dabbled in Modest Mouse until I read this thread... my favorite songs being Paper Thin Walls and Fire it Up. Now, however, I'm really getting into all of their different sounds. I'm not familiar enough with the entire discography to distinguish between pre- and post- Epic Records quality, but in my opinion, a band's willingness to evolve their sound and experiment is an artistic strength. Alas, sometimes (often?) the result is not as good as the raw original. But it's all part of the process, no?

debaserr 06-03-2011 12:05 AM

you should hear my beginner's guide to: Modest Mouse.

Mr November 06-03-2011 07:33 PM

We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank is a totally different basket of eggs from everything before it. It's still awesome and still Modest Mouse but it's way more considerate of the mainstream.

Shoebox 06-04-2011 06:13 AM

I have three Modest Mouse albums: We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, Good News for People Who Love Bad News and The Moon & Antarctica.

WWDBtSES and GNfPWLBN were the first ones I bought and therefore the ones I've listened to the most. I immedialty noticed that The Moon & Antartica sounded differently and I really liked the feel of many of the songs; rougher and more thought-provoking.

My only problem with the album (to start with) was the length. I bought the version with the additional BBC Radio 1 session songs on it and I didn't notice this until later so the first times I listened to M&A I reheard three of the album tracks when the album was supposed to end. This confused me and made me think "Haven't I heard this before?" and "Isn't it finished soon?". Sometimes I didn't have the patience to listen to the entire album.

Now that I've heard through the entire album several times (and ended it after 15 songs), I like it a lot better. There's something special about listening to an album as a whole - it really changes what I think of it. (And nearly always it's a positive change.)

theairwasthick 06-04-2011 11:23 AM

Modest Mouse are awesome, as are And You Will Know Us By The Trial Of Dead

Violent & Funky 06-04-2011 01:41 PM

I love both of those new songs!

SeaJay 06-08-2011 04:18 PM

Parting of the Sensory best song imo.

Shoebox 06-09-2011 07:17 AM

^ One of my favorite tracks from WWDBtSES as well.

I've never seen This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About in any record stores but last time I checked Platekompaniets websites (largest record store in Norway) they had it in stock. I'm thinking of buying it online - I've heard so much praise for it. (Also, it's sadly enough not on Spotify.)

maybe this question has been asked already but...when is Modest Mouse comin out with new stuff?? Currently listening to 'Heart Cooks Brain' what a cool song.

debaserr 09-21-2011 08:27 AM

They have been working on a new album for years. My guess is within six months.

Good. Theres a lack of legit indie music. This "Foster the People" **** makes me crazy.

Blip 09-26-2011 12:14 AM

I love Modest Mouse! Definitely one of my favorite bands, if not the top favorite. Isaac Brock has a side project called Ugly Casanova that anyone should check out if they like Modest Mouse.

blastingas10 12-03-2011 02:54 AM

I always thought they were alright. Pretty good for a newer band that is still making music. I saw them live about a month ago. I couldnt get into it.They're not bad I guess. I think Isaac Brock is pretty overrated as a lyricist.

Howard the Duck 12-03-2011 04:22 AM

i got The Moon & Antarctica recently

thought it was merely ok

i did like the single Float On (not on this album), though

debaserr 06-18-2012 04:52 PM

As a huge fan, this was an excellent watch:

Been trying to get into Good news but didn't rate it too much. I've just made a playlist of some of the best songs and have given up on the rest. I did the same thing with We were dead too. Not gonna bother with the earlier stuff though.

Gucci Little Piggy 06-19-2012 06:54 AM

I'm rather disappointed with the lack of attention for Modest Mouse on this forum. I personally love this band, it took me a while to get into it (admittedly, Brock's voice is hard to get into) but now I absolutely love Moon & Antartica and Lonesome Crowded West, fantastic albums.

Howard the Duck 06-19-2012 07:11 AM

is there a band called "Humble Rat", BTW?

All of their best work is from 2001 or earlier.

You at least have to try The Lonesome Crowded West.

It wasn't addressed in the doc, but I've always wondered why they chose to rerecord 'Lounge (Closing Time)'. Do you know why?

Modest Mouse's Upcoming Album

According to Isaac Brock, Modest Mouse has been working on new music for a while now. And they have been playing new material at the festival's they are attending. So their new album cannot be far off.

When do you think it will be released?
Do you think that it will live up to the quality of work Modest Mouse has had in the past?
How do you think their sound will have changed since We Were Dead?
