I saw REM last year and Modest Mouse opened for them, along with The National. They were both great but MM is better :)

Just wanted everyones input on Modest Mouse. Theyve been my favorite band for 7 years now and I cant get enough. Do you guys think they have gotten too "mainstream"?

I don't necessarily think they have gotten too mainstream, though they've been accepted by the mainstream. I just think the sincerity left their music a couple of albums back and I hardly enjoy it because of that. The stuff from We Were Dead... is darn terrible. I liked when he sang from the heart rather than just writing and singing pop songs (and when I say pop I don't mean mainstream...I mean pop).

I just made the classic noob error and posted a thread that already existed, sorry all.

Ill have to argue that. At first i thought we were dead was extremely pop like, but after a few good listens I realized its alot more than that. Spitting Venom and Fly Trapped in a Jar are both amazing songs.

I too am a huge MM fan and I enjoy most of their work. And I agree We Were Dead was a solid album. I just prefer the pre-good news MM a bunch more. It doesn't get better than Lonesome Crowded West for me. I have listened to their new stuff too and it seems pretty mediocre :soapbox:

It's not so much the sound that I was calling pop, they definitely have their own sound. Just that the lyrics/subject matter is more pop versus personal/heartfelt. And this has caused a huge shift in his vocal delivery, from sincere to more of a pop song delivery (yes with his own style). It just doesn't feel real and that's one thing I liked about MM in the beginning. That's all.

I can def see your point sidewinder. Im a bigger fan of their early stuff for the same reason. I think a few of their newer songs (Float On, Dashboard...) were considered more "normal" and therefore got them attention from a wider crowd, the radio crowd if you will, and I dont know how a band wouldnt change atleast a little bit to please the new fans. I do think MM didnt change too much and Ill sure as hell keep listening to them.
