The great guide to Indie and Alternative bands
 

I imagine this may get merged with the Indie Education thread But i decided to go out on a limb and make this a new thread anyway.


The idea of this thread is to create an index of as many Indie and Alternative bands as we can. What i would like to happen is people chose an Indie or Alternative band that they know and do a small write up about them.
What you would want to include;
-A descrpition of the music and vocals
-A quick history
-A few starter songs
-A starter album
-Further listening
-Etc

I would update the index in this post every few days.

I would like this thread to take off, but we'll see what happens.

Sounds like a good idea. Here's something I wrote about a band called South Jordan.

Indiana can get rather cold at this time of the year, but one band is trudging through the snow to make it to gigs on time. South Jordan, one of my favorite upcoming bands so far, has both the drive and the potential to make it big. Citing influences such as U2 and Coldplay, South Jordan has excellent musicianship and songwriting abilities. The irresistible qualities that make U2 and Coldplay so popular appear throughout South Jordan’s music. Ethereal timbres are reminiscent of Chris Martin’s style, while the faster tracks showcase distorted guitar, similar to Bono’s band. Despite the allusions to the two previously mentioned bands, South Jordan also seems to share some characteristics of The Fray.

The distinct moods give South Jordan variation among their songs. Each track contains different elements. Take “LayDown” for example. The majority of the song screams Coldplay influences, but “Not the One” sounds more like U2 than Coldplay. One track you can’t pass up is “Fatal Flaw”. It has a catchy melody and pleasing vocals. A full band version of the song is available on their website, and an acoustic version can be found on YouTube.

South Jordan recently signed with Union Entertainment Group, the artist management group responsible for representing Nickleback. Their new single “Firefly” is available on their MySpace page.

Quick question to anyone reading; Are Muse still considered Alternative? I know most people know a bit about them nowdays, but they are the only band i am a big expert in...

Ummm... what does that have to do with the thread?

So were just starting a community write up of bands that could possibly fall into two of the most utterly ambiguous genre headings that have ever existed? Quick think of every band that has been played on college radio over the course of the past 25 years. Sorry, this is just a dumb excuse to start a thread. And your right, the indie education thread already exists, thus making this one pretty pointless.
