I've decided these are the top 5 okkervil river songs.

1. So Come Back, I Am Waiting
2. Last Love Song For Now
3. For Real
4. Love to a Monster
5. It Ends with a Fall

Lizzie 03-03-2008 06:14 PM

Black Sheep Boy and So Come Back, I Am Waiting are two of my favoritist songs ever...and The Okkervil River Song......but last.fm is not letting me play any Okkervil River at all at the moment for some strange reason=(

And as I'm sure I've pointed it out earlier, it's a ridiculous claim. The great thing about music is that it's universal. If a boy from an island in the Mediterranean can enjoy Ryan Adams (whom may I remind you enjoys great success in "blighty") and his alt country wail without ever having experienced anything similar to the South or relate to the melancholy of Cesaria Evora's songs without actually understanding a single word she's saying , I'm sure English lads will have no problems relating to some American indie/folk band signing in his/her own language...

I'd like to add something to this, even if a bit late.

You are right about music being universal, BUT... it is true that a lot of people in, say, Britain, would not even give something like OR a go simply because it doesn't sound like Britpop (but crucially, not because they'd be unable to enjoy it even if they gave it a proper go). The only barrier, in that case, is the barrier that people set up for themselves. They hear something that's a little too far off their regular listening habits, and discard it immediately. These sorts of barriers are often rooted in cultural issues.

Okkervil River has the best album art ever. I'm definitely going to see them in Seattle. Starry Stairs is a great song I hope the rest of the album is darker than the Stage Names though I doubt Will Sheff will go down that road again.

sleepy jack 05-30-2008 04:39 PM

Move over Morrissey, Will Sheff's my favorite frontman ever.

sleepy jack 07-20-2008 09:16 PM

Yeah definitely my favorite album of the year.

I'm hoping to see them this time around. Either at Manchester or Glasgow. I would imagine that they'd be amazing live.

moose0ntheloose 08-02-2008 11:21 PM

Sooo excited for the stand ins!

FaSho 07-04-2009 09:10 PM

I'm bumping this thread, because I got Black Sheep Boy earlier today and ****ing love it. They have a somewhat unique sound for an indie band, and the only band I can really compare them too is Arcade Fire. Like a folkier Arcade Fire.

Alfred 07-04-2009 09:21 PM

Comparing Okkervil River and Arcade Fire is kinda like comparing Radiohead and Muse. The main similarity is the vocals, which in these bands case is overly breathy and unpolished and the overall vibe they give off, which is that quirky indie thing that all the bands that anyone talks about anymore seem to possess.

I like Okkervil River though. I enjoyed that album.

Spidersaretoads 07-08-2009 01:28 PM

I also think Black Sheep Boy should get more love!

FaSho 07-08-2009 01:30 PM

Just got The Stage Names. Better then BSB as a whole, but For Real and Black are still my favorites.

Son of JayJamJah 07-08-2009 01:37 PM

For Me it's like this: Don't Fall in Love...>Black Sheep...>Stage Names>Down the River...>Stand Ins

Though to be fair I've not given Stand-Ins much of a chance yet.

Still like the melodic simplicity and raw emotion being let loose in "Westfalls" is their high point.

adidasss 07-08-2009 01:53 PM

I haven't given them a listen in a while, thanks for reminding me...(:

Charlemagne 07-21-2009 12:19 PM

Love this band. Will Sheff is a great songwriter, he writes songs that are novel like in quality. Favorite album is Black Sheep Boy, but the Stage Names is a close second.

Engine 07-21-2009 12:27 PM

BSB was the first I heard by them. I pretty much loved it immediately -- it's the dark vibe that runs through most of the album.
I listened to all of their previous stuff and found it all boring compared to BSB (but not bad). Stage Names is pretty good but there is a distinct move towards more commercial viability there. This would not bother me in itself but it comes with more refined vocals by Sheff (is he...singing on key?!) and a more generic, albeit bigger sound.

restacks 07-21-2009 04:52 PM

i absolutely love this band, although after listening to 'the stand ins' i felt like they weren't really sure what they wanted to be. which is okay, it's just an observation on my part. 'lost coastlines' is probably my favorite song on that album. :) mmm.

jeffmyers123 07-22-2009 01:48 PM

best lyrics of any band i've ever heard. perfect songwriting. i saw them live in nyc too and they were awesome

i can't really agree on really comparing okkervil river and the arcade fire much at all besides the fact that they both have a very "indie" sound. and comparing muse and radiohead is REALLY valid considering radiohead is a DIRECT influence on Muse's work. Muse really took Radiohead's sound, took all of the creativity out of it, then added some orchestral bits and some harder rock influences and BAM! a hit was born.

Final_Victim 09-09-2009 11:14 PM

Okkervil River

Has anyone ever heard of this band? Found them some months ago and they've slowly become one of my favorite bands.

If anyone decides to get an album Black Sheep Boy and The Stage Names are pretty entry level.

I love Okkervil River. Lost Coastlines, off of the Stand-Ins album is one of my favorite songs.

SATCHMO 09-12-2009 01:31 AM

Done

sleepy jack 09-12-2009 04:08 AM

I want a new album. As much as I love pop culture references and porn stars I want Will Sheff to unleash the inner demon again.

Final_Victim 09-13-2009 03:52 PM

Black Sheep Boy is undeniably their most powerful album. IMO.

TammyJ 10-16-2009 06:09 PM

Yeah, BSB is far superior to the last two as a whole album. There have been great songs. But as an album, start to finish, BSB can't be beat in the Okkervil River catalog, IMO. "Black" is a fantastically angry and dark song.

abdullah424 10-16-2009 06:27 PM

What do you guys think of their earlier albums? I'm loving Down the River of Golden Dreams but I can't really get into Don't Fall in Love With Everyone You See.

They're all OK to Good. I like the dark vibe of BSB the most - all the earlier stuff is definitely sunnier.
