Noise Rock

Anyone know any good bands? Some of my favorites are Lightning Bolt,No Age, and Pink & Brown. I could go on a lot more but it's sometimes hard to draw the line between Noise Rock and Math Rock.

Odyshape 03-29-2010 05:00 PM

No age is pretty cool. I really love wavves though. You should try their album wavvves. Its by one dude and is probably one of my favorite lo fi noisy albums.

BTown 03-29-2010 06:06 PM

I actually just came accross him today. It was a little to much for me to handle.

jackhammer 03-29-2010 07:01 PM

Jackhammer brings out the old faithful :) If you don't like this then noise Rock isn't for you:

music_phantom13 03-29-2010 07:22 PM

:D Good call Jackhammer, that is one of my absolute favorites. If you don't like Melt-Banana I don't think you can say you like noise rock.

I could go on for a while with bands, but here's a few of my favorites.

That's a full album by An Albatross... sadly far too short.

Xinlisupreme is great for harsh noise, but may not be for you if Wavves is too much.

If you've never listened to Fuck Buttons, their music is like noise rock combined with post rock. Cool stuff.

While we're on the topic, I'd just like to know what exactly noise rock is. For example, would Telescopes fit in? They're usually classified as shoegaze, but they're pretty damn harsh. Or bands like Suicide, DNA, Swans, and other no wave stuff. Would you guys call these noise rock?

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 03-30-2010 12:53 AM

no age/wavvves/etc are not noise rock

It's a massively vague term but if it sounds loud and harsh and rejects most formal ideas of songwriting then you're probably on the right track. I wouldn't say most shoegaze stuff can be classified as it but no-wave is generally very similar, i'd be happy to class Swans as noise rock.

Melt Banana. Lightning Bolt and Fuck Buttons as previously mentioned are big daddies, here's a couple of other highlight bands for me..

Violent & Funky 03-30-2010 07:42 AM

Japanther is a great two-piece noise rock outfit from NYC:

jackhammer, that is an awesome song. What's the name of the band?

Violent & Funky 03-30-2010 07:52 AM

Oh yeah, and just saw The Jesus Lizard thread in this same forum. I'm gonna assume you are well aware of all of the Albini noise rock groups...

sidewinder 03-30-2010 11:29 AM

I think early Trail of Dead is good noise rock. They're also considered other things so I wouldn't classify them purely as noise rock, but the early stuff...noisy.

BTown 03-30-2010 02:23 PM

Shellac or Rapeman's probably my favorite out of the Albini groups

Some of my favorite Lightning Bolt

BTown 03-30-2010 02:31 PM

Oh, and anyone a fan of any Noise Pop?
Some of my favorites

Hell, every album made by all of Albini's own bands are essential. Then there's the 800 bands whose albums he produced that are worth checking out. Check his credits in the Skin Graft catalog and you're set.

Alfred 03-30-2010 07:24 PM

I enjoy F*ck Buttons, Melt-Banana, Big Black, and Lightning Bolt. I really need to check out some of these other bands.

music_phantom13 03-30-2010 07:33 PM

I sadly have never listened to Rapeman. I intend to change that ASAP, I ****ing love Big Black. I love most noise rock though, I was just trying to clarify what exactly falls under the term (I'm not so clear on genres, but my favorite music tends to be things made to be played loud with lots of distortion).

As far as noise pop, I'd recommend the Raveonettes, and definitely Railcars (they're very bizarre but one of my favorite bands), also Women seem to fit in with the bands you mentioned. More noise rock - The Mutators are always good, as well as AIDS Wolf. If you're looking for full blown noise check out Yellow Swans, but that has far less melody and structure than anything else mentioned so far.

You sure? What is considered noise rock then?

These guys are pretty awesome.

dankrsta 04-22-2010 06:42 PM

I absolutely love Lightning Bolt. From what I've heard of them, 2Morro Morro Land from Hypermagic Mountain is my favourite for now. It helps me to quickly wake myself up in the morning.

PopIsDead 04-23-2010 03:40 AM

The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, Black Eyes, and Liars (especially before their self-titled album) are pretty great.

props on mutators, not exactly a well known band. they have a split with night wounds, you should check them out if you haven't before.

uhh most the other stuff in this thread... i really don't have anything positive to say about his music though so i'll leave it at that.

dankrsta 05-04-2010 12:35 PM

Magic Markers are an interesting noise-rock band, or just noise. I listened to one of their first releases on Ecstatic Peace from 2005. I Trust My Guitar, etc and it's reminiscent of no-wave or early Sonic Youth from Confusion is Sex/Kill Your Idols period. Since then they had several releases and I wonder if anyone have listened to them. As I understood they somewhat changed their sound, so I'm curious to hear how they developed.

Not the best quality but the best I could find from that earlier period

Violent & Funky 05-08-2010 11:49 AM

This has been my noise rock jam lately:

duga 05-14-2010 02:18 PM

I just recently got into Afrirampo...it's two girls from Japan who have made a reputation for themselves by the raw energy they have on stage. They really just sound like they are having a great time while making their music. If any of you guys are familiar with Acid Mothers Temple, they are good friends with that band and record on their label. They even made an album together called We Are Acid Mothers Afrirampo...which I also recommend if you like either band.

Exo 03-01-2021 01:39 PM

Might as well bring this back from the dead for this one...

KimBertrand 03-01-2021 02:00 PM

^much appreciated. re-reading the thread reminded me of a few groups i used to love but forgot about. Lightning Bolt in particular

Re-listening to Wonderful Rainbow now

Distorted vocals, fuzzy bass and blast beats. This was everything to me as a teenager. It's a little repetitive to me now but even still I'm feelin it.

Marie Monday 03-01-2021 02:14 PM

Yeah Lightning Bolt kicks ass. A great energy boost too, it's like musical coke or something

Tristan_Geoff 03-01-2021 07:00 PM

I listened to this band recently called Avenade the first album I heard last year and it was p good but this new one omg it's noise-emo/deftones worshipping greatness all packed in this lo-fi noise shoegaze whatever filter and it sounds like god's tears
