America's Finest

Okay so we had one for UK music, after having experienced one of the most stunning gigs of my life last night, a band called Low from Minnesota, I'm interested in hearing your faveourite U.S indie/alternative bands.

1. Low
2. Songs: Ohia/ Magnolia Electric Co
3. Wilco
4. Cat Power
5. Bonnie Prince Billy
6. Smog
7. Micah P Hinson
8. The Hidden Cameras
9. Le Tigre
10. Jim O'rourke

I apologise if there's one that isn't actually an American band, but I'm pretty sure they are

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-26-2005 04:49 PM

Well i`ve seen Smog described as British & American in various magazines.

I always thought they were American

Sweet Jane 02-26-2005 04:57 PM

I'm pretty sure on Smog, Bill Callahan's voice is certainly not British. Was more worried about mistaking a Canadian band for a Northern American one and causing offence, you know how people love to pick on each other

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-26-2005 05:01 PM

Ah that won`t happen.

I can`t think of a single person I know who would list a Canadian band as their favourite

Sweet Jane 02-26-2005 05:06 PM

Haha, true

Except...

.......

........No, I can't do it

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-26-2005 05:31 PM

May as well try & do this

1. Flaming Lips
2. Trail Of Dead
3. Grandaddy
4. Radio 4
5. Sparklehorse
6. Tortoise
7. The Liars
8. The Rapture
9. The Shins
10.The Walkmen

Actually I found it pretty hard to come up with 10 American indie bands I do actually rate. I think Britain does that sort of thing so much better than America.

I find American bands best when they make traditional music , For example Americans do Hip Hop so much better than British musicians , American bands do traditional rock better, and also the same with blues , funk , soul & country.

I think British music is more innovative at crossing genres & creating new things & American music is better at doing what it does best.

I guess thats a whole new topic right there.

Hmmm... toughie... Thinking about their really aren't that many in my CD collection... Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips (Confront that psychic wall of energy, Sponge!) and the Mars Volta... Oh and Rilo Kiley coming through now seem pretty good. There's a load of great Canadian bands actually... Yas! New thread!

Sweet Jane 02-27-2005 04:18 AM

Rilo Kiley are pretty good, I just reviewed their latest album 'More Adventures' for my magazine, its nothing overtly special but nice, varied sounds, some twee pop, some country, very tight. I don't think they'll be underground for long, this album will definetly help them break through to mainstream.

i like the new york scene in america, the rapture, the walkmen, hot hot heat and the bravery to a lesser extent. low are cool as are 80s matchbox b-line disaster. brmc are my favourite american indie/rock band. there is one american band that sound so british..but their name evades me. the shins, trail of dead and japanese simon all appeal to my sense of hearing too.
