Galaxie 500

Searches turned up no results, which is sad considering how brilliant this band is.

On Fire is without a doubt one of the most heartwarming albums in existence. Slowcore done flawlessly. Today is also a very good album, and This is Our Music, while the weakest of the three, isn't bad in any way and boasts one of their best songs, "Fourth of July".

"Tell Me" (live without a drumline apparently, but still a stellar performance)

"Strange"

"Tugboat" (comes with a pretty cool video of them playing likely early on in their career in a gymnasium of sorts.)

Definitely not music to listen to if you can't appreciate the brilliance that shines through simplicity (I say that with the most pretension possible!).

I wish you wouldn't say Slowcore - to me it's the least descriptive of any of the something-core words that I've heard

On the other hand, I love your use of the word "flawless" regarding Galaxie 500

Dean Wareham in general does some pretty good work. Luna is as good or better than Galaxie 500, IMO.

The album version of that was my theme song for a summer.

Haven't checked Luna out, but I might. Galaxie 500 speaks volumes to me.

Hey guys, did'ja know that Conan fucking O'Brien helped them out when they were first starting? A spare drum set can go pretty far I guess.

love all 3 of their albums. Initially I wasn't too keen on the vocals, but I warmed to them eventually. I find them to have a lot more substance than most other bands you could call 'shoegaze', although I don't really think of Galaxie 500 as a shoegaze band anyway.

Yeah, Galaxie 500 didn't stress on guitar effects. Not very shoegaze-y. Although, I'm curious as to what shoegaze you're listening to, as I find a lot of it is very rich with substance... Albeit Galaxie 500 are very substance-filled in a completely different genre.

I've loved shoegaze for years, I just find Galaxie 500 to have more long-term appeal than a lot of those bands. For example, today I regard Galaxie 500 as better songwriters than MBV. It certainly hasn't always been that way, I mean I regard Loveless as one of the most important albums I ever listened to. It's strange how over time your opinions change, I remember thinking years ago about how I would always regard Loveless as my favourite album no matter WHAT, I found it so good. But although I've known Galaxie 500 almost as long, I still love them and listen to them often nowadays, which isn't the case really for MBV.

btw I only bring up shoegaze because you often see G500 mentioned in association with that style of music.

I didn't listen to this band for years and when I did it was only to "This Is Our Music". I remember that it wasn't very easy for me to get into it, but in the end I really loved it. Contrary to the poster above, the voice and the singing style were a hooking point for me and the elements of music fell in their place later (generally it's the other way around). Now that I'm reminded, I've got to renew my love for them.
