I'm looking for some songs that employ a lot of guitar distortions (so nothing acoustic please), like these songs:
  • "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana
  • "Song 2" by Blur
  • "Elevator" by the Black Keys
  • "Violet Hill" by Coldplay
  • "Do What You Want" by OK Go

i recommend

And highly recommend

Have you ever heard Rise Against, or La Dispute? Rise Against is alternative, and La Dispute is Post Hardcore. They're both screamo-ish, but not in all their songs. I personally prefer La Dispute, but that's because I find the lyrics are more interesting (deep, if you will).

Personally, my favorite indie bands are Twenty One Pilots (Highly recommend, I'm going to see them in concert in October), The xx, Wolf Gang, The Cinema, Miike Snow, and Massive Attack.

For anybody who wants to listen to them, here's a good song from each of them~
Migraine - Twenty One Pilots
Islands - The xx
Suego Faults - Wolf Gang
Picasso - The Cinema
Silvia - Miike Snow
Teardrops - Massive Attack

I apologize, I'm new and can't yet post links, or I would.

Looking for some recent shoegaze recommendations. I'm pretty familiar with the obvious standards- MBV, Spacemen 3, Cocteau Twins, Lush... etc. Looking for stuff that's maybe a bit harsher? Hook me up yo.

Not sure if it would be your thing but Deerhunter, Ride, and Slowdive are all really good.

I can't really think of much recent stuff that will fit your bill, but you could check out A Place to Bury Strangers and True Widow.

For some older stuff that's leaning towards the harsher end of the spectrum try The Telescopes, Loop, Lilys (In the Presence of Nothing), Swirlies, Flying Saucer Attack (self-titled), The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa (early stuff), Skywave (very harsh!), Band of Susans and Henry's Dress (leaning more towards noise-pop).

Hi there,

There is an incredible indie band from the 90's on the 4AD label that
somehow didn't make it very big... The Pale Saints! And specially their
album "In Ribbons" who, in my heart is as good as Radiohead's OK computer.

All great suggestions - Band of Susans are seriously underrated!

I saw The Telescopes live recently and it was pretty much just a noise gig - not much in the way of songs at all, just an all out feedback assault. It was good! Their first album is a good one for harsher shoegaze.

I'd suggest Bailter Space, WhateverDude.

They're more noise rock than shoegaze but they cross the line on occasion - like on this one.
