The new Cake record....

"Showroom Of Compassion," you guys looking forward to it? :D

I got to go see them when they came to Charlotte on October 30th, and it was, easily, the best show I've ever been to :D

I can't wait for the new album to come out.

Wow I had no idea there was something to look forward to. Sweet. That's why I'm glad I don't bug artists to hurry up and release music. They think about it and think about it and clock hours on it to make what they want to make. I'm hoping for another solid addition to the CAKE set...

Sick of You will do, for a radio tune. Nice at 1:35, that's classic CAKE. Bit unlikable vocals on the first half for me, but loved 1:55 - 2:35.
Very nice, welcome back CAKE. Some regional heroes right here.

I love 'em. Easily my favorite band :D They've also spent all the time since B-Sides and Rarities converting their studio to 100% solar power :afro:

I know a lot of people who don't like 'em because of the raw sound. No editing, no vocal pitching, nothing like that. I happen to love it. Also, John and Xan are two of my heroes :D

I'm looking forward to it. Cake is a band that I'd love to see live, too

Kirby 12-23-2010 09:52 PM

I'm seeing them live in January.
On the 17th I believe.

And I'm waiting for the new album as well.

I guess I can say this to the both of ya. It's a religious experience

I loved it. It was awesome. John got REALLY into it with the crowd, and it was just so cool:

The beginning of 'Sick of You' annoyed the hell out of me when I heard it in the car a few days ago, but I stuck through the song because I knew that it had to be new Cake. No one else has that deadpan way of singing.

I'm pretty damn excited. I love them.

ha cool thanks for the heads up!

saw cake once. all i remember is during the "na na na na na na" interlude of Short Skirt / Long Jacket they had the audience sing the "na na na" bit, and it went on for 5 whole minutes. i was irate.

Yeah, they did the same when they played here  It was annoying, but it was fun. I remember a friend of mine, an older guy, saw them way back when, and he said that the crowd wasn't getting into the music to the point that John put his guitar down and walked off the stage :D

I don't love Cake, but I have to admit, when I heard the single "Sick of You" on an independent radio station near me, it was actually the first time a song on the radio got me excited for an upcoming album. I really want this album, despite the fact that I was immensely irritated by Fashion Nugget. Like I said, this single got me really pumped!

I'm not a huge fan of Cake, but after hearing "Sick of You", I'm pretty excited.

this thread breaks my heart. Audience participation is bad? Yowza.

Cake is one of the most underrated bands going. I see them everytime they're in town.

6underground 01-05-2011 04:57 PM

Do they do a good live performance? I'm seeing them in two weeks, but some bands don't translate to stage like others, no matter how much I love them.

s_k 01-05-2011 05:18 PM

Downloading. Single is a bit too simple for me. Good radio tune, but that's it.
Wonder what the album is like.

You're going to want to know the songs, because its a highly involved show for the audience. I love them live.

hey now, don't go and generalize my statement. i just don't like it when artists rely to heavily on it to make their performance.

Skye from Morcheeba is one of the worst, she pulls the crowd into half of the songs she puts on. i pay to hear her sing, not to hear her try to get the audience to sing...

back on topic, i listened to the new Cake after i downloaded it, but i don't remember a single track, and have not picked it up again. not a good sign...

To me, they do. I mean, whichever one of you said that you pay to hear them sing, not half the crowd singing along, you have a point there. But then again, there's a certain charm to being that comfortable with the audience, y'know?

Plus, since they don't use anything to clean up their sound on the albums, their live sound is pretty much identical. They really emphasize this raw, punchy, yet laid-back sound that I just love :D

TheBig3 02-23-2011 09:54 AM

I'll be doing the write-up for it in the discography thread by the weeks end. I've been spinning it a ton lately, and its not that easy to get your head around. I love it, but it took a few spins.

If you get it, I suggest you start on track 5 and let it spin around to track 4. the first 2 songs shouldn't lead the album but are ultimately good, they just go better with the album. One of the tracks (#3 "Got to Move) I personally think is terrible and sounds like a sped-up version of "Stand by you" by the Pretenders.

I really love:

Thank you for reminding me that I downloaded it awhile ago but I haven't gotten around to listening to it yet.
