Levellers

Levellers divide opinion massively over here. Many love their simplistic approach to their music, fans and money earned (the band put all money earned into a fund which is then shared out between all members each day) whilst others disagree with the band milking their original 'squat' roots (all jackboots, scruffy clothes and dreadlocks) and using trad. folk instruments in their music such as the fiddle and mandolin.

However they still are festival favourites and have made some damn good tunes in their time.

Their music (posted on here by myself I must add) is a poor man's New Model Army with a DIY punk attitude mixed with Folk roots and political and social lyrics but it still stands up well considering they have been gigging for over 20 years now.

Their first 3 albums are definitely worth a listen and I do admire their defiant British sound although they have made a few forays into hit single territory :(

Have a listen:

Recommended albums:

A Weapon Called The Word (1990)
Levelling The Land (1991)
Mouth To Mouth (1997)

Wow I really like it. I'm off to hunt me down a copy of Levelling the Land. Reminds me a bit of the band Carbon Leaf, but rawer and gruffer. For some reason I tend to really enjoy an English folk sound in music. Thanks!

I thought those first two tracks were pretty decent but it was that third one, Another Man's Cause, that really got my attention. I just love the added touches of the harmonica and violin.

So, I guess it's whichever album that's off first then...

I'm not the biggest levellers fan. But I have a couple of their CD's and I just love their songs Four Winds and Hard Fight

I only have their best-of, One Way Of Life, but two songs I really like are

Their best-of is actually on one of the jukeboxes in my college.

Wow, from the description I wasn't sure if I'd like these guys but this is good stuff. They use those folk instruments to awesome effect!
