Wiki: "Tune-Yards (often stylized as tUnE-yArDs) is the project of New England native Merrill Garbus. When performing live, Garbus creates drum loops on the spot, and layers these with ukulele, voice, and electric bass (played by Nate Brenner). The first Tune-Yards album, Bird-Brains, was originally self-released by Garbus on recycled cassette tape. It was recorded using only a handheld voice recorder. A second album, w h o k i l l, was released on April 19, 2011. A single from it, "Bizness", came out in February 2011. It was produced by Garbus and engineered by Eli Crews at New, Improved Studios in Oakland, California. Applying the live approach to her studio work for the first time, Garbus works with bass player Nate Brenner, who co-wrote some of the album's songs. Comparing the act to Sonic Youth, Frontier Psychiatrist said, "if BiRd-BrAiNs was Garbus’ EVOL, a record bursting with musical ideas that attempted to subvert the notion of song, w h o k i l l is her Sister, a record that embraces the traditional pop song as a vehicle to convey those ideas." Definitely the freshest sounding record of 2011 for me. I couldn't believe this is actually a white chick, she sounds like a black dude. And the music is a fantastic amalgamation of Dirty Projectors, Tv on the radio, Vampire Weekend and Micachu and the shapes. So yeah, really good stuff. The fantastic single Bizness: |
Wow. I like that song a lot! I hear a very strong afro-pop influence in there which is pretty cool.
|
Ok, it's definitely the strongest album I've heard this year. It's gonna take something pretty spectacular to top this.
My country for song of the year: Seriously, so many things going on with this song. I have no idea how these artists which seem to spring out of nowhere manage to produce (and I don't mean just make but actually produce) songs as immaculate as this. The fuck. |
Any links perchance? This album is not the easiest thing to find. :)
|
Bird-Brains was just an alright album, but I can see myself liking this one. It will at least be fun to listen to. :)
|
Best thing I've heard this year. I'll check out the rest, cheers.
Nice to see you've moved on from your Coldplay obsession. ;) |
"Gangsta" is a pretty interesting track... I like how she uses the distortion of her voice throughout the song to simulate sirens, and how (towards the end) she uses the percussion and saxophone to make it sound as if there were guns shooting.

I haven't been able to stop listening to my country.
you still need help janz? |

I've only listened to the album once but it sounds pretty great so far! |
i definitely want to cop this album now.

WHOKILL is the best LP I've heard so far this year, though I've only heard two others (James Blake, Panda Bear). At first I thought it sounded like they were trying to do to much at once, and the wackiness of it was a touch irritating, but it grew on me with each track and I really liked it by the end. Definitly hear the Projectors in there which at least is an unusual influence.

Glad to see some love for these guys...(:

I've just listened to WHOKILL, not overly blown away, it isnt melodic enough for me never seems to flow enough. Just a personal call though.
|
WhoKill is very good. I'd say it's my favourite album of 2011 so far.
It made me go out and look at Tune-Yard because I was curious where the hell this album came from. This Merrill Garbus is a very interesting person. |
Every time I see the band name typed out in UpEr and LoWeR case letters I read it as "turds".

The Tune Yards
So I was watching Austin City Limits a week or so ago and after a typical Edward Sharpe et al performance, on came this group. Holy hell! I wanted to hate them, and I'm sure many will. But I love them.
This chic creates loops with a snare drum, other various percussion, and a ukelele, among other instruments. Her voice is interesting and there is a sax section. I think they would be awesome live. Anyone else listen to the Tune Yards? Or care to offer any opinions? They have two albums out. I haven't really given either a listen, just excited about the two songs below I've heard: |

WHOKILL might be my favorite album of the past few years, honestly. It's not perfect or anything, but it sounds exactly how I think more modern music should sound like. Just a great production style to me. Haven't heard the first album all the way through, though, but I at least liked what I heard...just not as much as the second album.

Afro-pop is my favorite sound, so it's no surprise I've latched onto this. I downloaded WHOKILL earlier today; going to give it a proper listen this week. I look forward to it. |
An interesting mix here. My Morning Jacket meets the Tune Yards.

|
^^ Yeah, they've been on repeat for me since I found them. "Bizness" is one of my favorites as well. I would love to go to a show
|
So good.

considering the kind of music they make you would think it's all studio tricks but it seems they can recreate it live. |
