Default Alternative or Modern Rock?

Some people have been arguing that Incubus is alternative and others say it's modern rock. Which do you think? I personally think that it's alternative, but now I'm confused.

well after the endless discussions with had on this forum about the definition of alternative, id go with modern rock. its a bit of vague description though, i always think of incubus as a throw back to the west coast surf era.

If I had to pick one of those two genres, Id say modern rock... It would depend on the Incubus you were listening to though, theyve changed a lot over the years.

Their older stuff is more like funk, not alternative or modern rock.
Fungus Amongus was funk and then the rest of their CDs just got lighter and lighter. Morning View was their most mellow album out of all of their albums.

I don't know if it was totally mellow, circles was rather heavy, and then crow left of the murder was pretty heavy (comparativly speaking)
