We are Young If you haven't heard this in some commercial somewhere you might not own a television. Was rated as song of the year by some outfit (2011). Some Nights They said this was Graceland/Power (Simon/West) mashup and I can hear that, but I still hear Queen and Kansas in here too. |

I found out about this band after their little burst of popularity and after listening to both of their albums they are definitely worth checking out. And this is a pop band! Me actually liking a pop band does not happen every day.
Nobody has mentioned their first album yet, 'Aim and Ignite'. It is much more consistent then 'Some Nights'. With the second album I felt that it had tracks that surpassed anything on 'Aim and Ignite' ('Some Nights (Intro),' 'Some Nights', 'One Foot'). But then the rest of the album has that 'this album should be 6 tracks shorter' feel. tl:dr listen to the first album as well. This is a good pop band. |
All I've heard is 'We Are Young' and I really hate that song for some reason, despite being a Janelle Monae fan. It is catchy though.

We Are Young is their worst track.
I still think Some Nights has a more bombastic sound, but Aim & Ignite is definitely more consistant. That said, I listen to Some Nights a lot more. |
I listened to Some Nights nonstop when I got it, for like a week, but I still like Aim & Ignite much more as an album. Of course, with most artists they've gotta get poppier as they progress, but I like Aim & Ignite specifically because of its emphasis on strings/a more classical sound. Also, the beat is less constant, which gave them more freedom to mess around/experiment a bit more, specifically in a song like Be Calm:
fun. - Be Calm [AUDIO] - YouTube Some Nights is an awesome album, but the autotune in Stars kills that song for me, even though parts of it are so great. I'm really excited to see what they do next. I'm seeing them next month actually, I've heard they're great live! |

I listened to em when they were the Format, and i enjoy the Format so much better.

They really screwed up somewhere between Aim & Ignite and Some Nights.
Aim & Ignite was an incredibly solid album, touching on some pop while still carrying enough rock influence (a lot being Queen, clear as day) to be a solid and incredible album. As for Some Nights, I don't know if it's because they got signed to Fueled by Ramen or what, but they went from being very solid to sounding like a relapse of P!ATD's Vices and Virtues. |
Because there was such a big time gap between Aim & Ignite and Some Nights, the original fans have latched onto their previous sound so much that Some Nights now sounds alien. I'll agree there was absolutely no gradual process involved. They just straight up changed their sound.
But I do think some of the original fans are just pulling that "They were cool before they were mainstream" bull****. |
I couldn't care less that they changed their sound, I like it when artists change their sound. I don't want to have 18 copies of the same album with a different name.
It's just that the sound they've grown into is one that, to me, sounds more commercial than their previous work. On a positive note, their Live At Fingerprints album is great, I don't know if they've released any other live material since then, but if you're just getting into them Live At Fingerprints is the album to check out. |

I'm very pretentious about my art, Duraddict. |
What did you like about Aim & Ignite? I much prefer the newer album to the old one.

It just really is interesting and new to me whenever I listen to it. I love how the songs are stories too. I love stories. Quote:

Being a big fan of Queen, I find Fun to be unbearable. I have only heard their second album though.

My hipster-b!tch came out when I heard "Some Nights" and I totally thought they sold-out, but I eventually learned to love it slightly below "Aim & Ignite" as I realized I could still hear them in the new record and they sounded amazing live when I saw them. Their third album will make or break them for me (at least until their next album) so this time I hope they don't let their producer tell them to get rid of the "crazy extra stuff" or whatever Jeff Bhasker called it. If they'd just somehow merge the rawness of "Aim & Ignite" with the more epic feel of "Some Nights", it'd be killer. |
ive not listened to them extensivly by any means
somethin about the lead singer really irks me. maybe just cause i thought it sounded sooo bad when he used autotune in that one song i heard. they have been over played sometimes but i dont hold that against bands |
I've never understood the claims that Some Nights is more mainstream than their first album or that they've 'sold out' (which is a meaningless term in my mind). Their style is pretty much the exact same sugary indie-pop as it was in Aim and Ignite, just with the more electronic incorporation. I don't buy the use of auto-tune as evidence of anything, much less selling out. I think it's a tool that can be used creatively and effectively, or not, just like any other tool. Claims that autotune detracts from the 'soul' of a piece are ridiculous to me. "Stars" is the most poignant, expressive song they've released in my opinion, and it uses autotune extensively.
I know that this response would've been much more relevant a year ago, but I just discovered this thread. |
