I bought the self-titled and De Stijl albums by The White Stripes on the same day back in 2003. I borrowed Elephant from a friend and became hooked and decided to dive into their discography right away. I was about 13and had never been so interested in a band before.

First indie album? um. Bloody hell, I think it's actually Skeletal Lamping by Of Montreal (2008!). I don't buy albums often, as my parents have a pretty wide library and I usually download. Every other album I bought was stuff I bought when I was six or seven, such as Placebo (ew) and Gorillaz (I still like them actually).

You were buying Gorillaz at 7? You were certainly ahead of the curve :O

Division of fans. The ones who heard them on MTV and thought they were catchy or whatever. And the ones who liked Dan the Automator/Del Tha Funkee Homosapien/Damon Albarn's work. I was pretty much the former at first, but now I'm the latter.

PartisanRanger 02-12-2009 09:17 PM

The first alternative album I ever bought was actually the first album I ever bought, period. At the age of nine I picked up Nirvana's live album "On the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah" back in 1996. I didn't know anything about Nirvana at the time but had heard that they were cool so I picked it up.

Bellerophon 02-13-2009 01:22 PM

Radiohead's "Pablo Honey" when I was 10.

dtx21 10-25-2009 04:45 PM

Ten by Pearl Jam, I think.

indienerd 10-25-2009 05:19 PM

If Third Eye Blind's eponymous counts, that was it. If not, then In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

3eb was my first CD. My first non-soundtrack cassette purchase was Chumbawumba "Tubthumper" in elementary school.

Antonio 10-25-2009 11:48 PM

uhhh first indie album i remmeber was Rilo Kiley's The Execution of All Things. still love it

First alternative albums were RHCP's BloodSugarSexMagick and Clutch's Pure Rock Fury

loveissucide 10-26-2009 08:36 AM

The first Franz Ferdinand album, followed not long after by Weezer's Blue Album.

music_phantom13 10-26-2009 11:52 AM

I have no idea... I guess the first alternative album I bought was probably Blood Sugar Sex Magick. First indie album, I don't know. I remember buying Bleach at a pretty young age.

And it's simply a lie to say that there aren't independent bands anymore, by the way. I can think of plenty of things I listen to that have been produced and released entirely by the band or on very very small labels that I can absolutely gaurantee have no ties to major labels (as in they don't use distribution companies, they do everything themselves). Also, I won't lie and say I know that much about record labels and how they could tie into the major ones, but what about labels like Jagjaguwar? Or the Beggars Group? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't know they had ties.

Ganging Up On The Sun - Guster

NumberNineDream 10-26-2009 10:56 PM

I guess my first indie album would be: The New Gov. Strikes by The New Gov.. It's the debut album of a local indie band, and I think that was the first time I listen about something called "indie".
I remembered having that album last week, some very good songs.

debaserr 10-27-2009 12:40 AM

Pixies - Doolittle

good choice

chrissygerraty 10-28-2009 04:36 PM

Mine was Weezer (Blue Album). I was really young (9) but bought it with my allowance because this older boy that I liked who lived above me always wore their t-shirt and obviously I wanted him to think I was cool...

+81 10-28-2009 11:43 PM

Probably Nirvana's greatest hits or Dirty by Sonic Youth.

storymilo 10-29-2009 06:14 AM

A while ago for Christmas I got a Nirvana cd (I think it was their greatest hits). I wasn't really interested in music and I had no idea who Nirvana was so I don't think I listened to it much until I really started listening to music.

TammyJ 10-29-2009 06:40 AM

The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta ;)

Guybrush 10-29-2009 06:45 AM

U2 - Joshua Tree,
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Toy Dolls - Dig That Groove Baby
Paul McCartney - Give My Regards to Broad Street
Johnny Cash - Bonanza (was an LP)

Plus a few more. These are albums bought by my parents and older siblings that I would sit down and listen to when I was a kid. I can't remember what the first album I ever bought myself was, but when I was 14 I got a really nice stereo (huge really) quite cheap (paid 4000 NOK for it, which would be about 475 EUR or 700 USD). Pink Floyd's live album Pulse was quite new at the time. I got it and it sounded amazing on my new big speakers. :)

The Pulse album cover also had a little light on it which lit up in pulse-like fashion. Pretty cool!

LoathsomePete 10-29-2009 09:10 AM

My first alternative album was Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins back in 1997.

My first indie album was probably You're a Woman, I'm a Machine by Death From Above 1979 back when that was released in 2004. I really wasn't that into "indie" music much when I was younger but I thought the cover looked interesting, also there was this really hot punk senior at my high school that had the pin on her backpack so I wanted to impress her.

FETCHER. 10-29-2009 09:22 AM

The first compilation I bought was Bonkers 16, Best of Bonkers, Bonkers 17
Ages ago, roughly last yearish when that's what I was into.
First CD altogether was probably some Vengaboys shit
Atomic Kitten as well
First one I stole from my brother was, Rezerection the awakening of '95. A Classic.
those tunes still appear on setlists.
plus it's rare and costs about £30 these days.

OOOOOOPS, i thought this was in General music.
Eh my first Indie album would have been Glasvegas, if thats what they come under.

abdullah424 10-29-2009 09:38 AM

I think the first alternative cd I bought was The Smashing Pumpkins - Adore, which is still one of my favorite albums ever. Chalk full of gems.

Sneer 10-29-2009 11:46 AM

Radiohead - the Bends. Sorry to mention their name.

When you get down to it, the first alternative album (although not-so-much an 'alternative' anymore) was this fine little number right here:

Remains one of my favorite albums. As for "indie" releases I really can't remember but I would assume I got my first one during my bulk-downloading phase I went through earlier this year.

SATCHMO 11-04-2009 08:45 AM

Let's see:
First 45"- The Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down to Georgia
First full length LP - The Oak Ridge Boys - Greatest Hits

First CD ' Pink Floyd - Animals

I think the first "alternative" album (tape) I bought was Violent Femmes s/t. Around the same time I got Mother's Milk by RHCP, Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction, and Head on the Door by The Cure. These are what taught me that there was more to music than metal, punk, and top 40 pop.

No, wasn't me. At the time Nancy Reagan had me scared shitless to try any drugs. Just say no, man - otherwise you'll think you can fly..

hoorayforpeepee1990 11-04-2009 04:13 PM

The first thing I ever downloaded was the entire Modest Mouse discography at once:)

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-04-2009 06:45 PM

I was still on dial up back then.

Took me almost 3 days to get that album

An entire discography was a thing of dreams to me 9 years ago.

Well I didn't start downloading or even buying albums till really recently.

And technically I guess I didn't download off megaupload or whatever, I used BitTorrent

On second thought those days sucked.
