Default Alt-J

I really like these guys, I've discovered them through checking out the set list of an indie festival I'm going to. From Wiki:

∆ (pronounced Alt-J) are a British alternative indie pop quartet, formed in 2007. Their debut album An Awesome Wave was released in May 2012 in Europe[2] and September 2012 in the United States, eventually winning the 2012 Mercury Prize.

Their debut album drew on multiple musical genres and sensibilities (folk, rock bass, catchy pop, hip-hop beats, trip-hop atmosphere, indie-rock quirkiness, electronic heavy synth riffs), wedding them to intimately personal, sometimes confessional lyrics, peppered with film and literary references including allusions to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Luc Besson's Léon: The Professional and Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are.[7]

They get a lot of hate, but I quite liked An Awesome Wave.

Why is that they get hate?

They are an indie rock band who are getting pretty big. Normal to see them get a little hate. Despite not being all that "awesome", I think they are decent.

I'm glad to hear you like them. I can't stand people being pretentious about bands because they become 'popular'.

I didn't mind An Awesome Wave, but I haven't exactly been rushing to get it ever since I reformated my computer. It had some really good songs and was a nice breath of fresh air from all the death metal I was listening to at the time, but I think their next album will really be the decider if this is a genuinely great band, or another band that's fallen into the unfortunate realm of hype.

An Awesome Wave is the most misleading title of any album this year.
There is nothing 'awesome' about it, it's just a painfully mediocre record trying to profoundly pretend to be better than it is.
No surprise to me the Mercury Prize was bestowed upon it since that is the case.

Well, on the contrary, I think that alt-J actually make very stand-out and edgy music, and tracks such as "Bloodflood" and "Breezeblocks" are really clever and shimmer with quality.

I'm seeing them live in January in Alexandra Palace, London. Hoping they're good on stage. God, the crowd's going to be full of hipsters.

It's not in the least bit edgy.

A bit over-hyped, but I think An Awesome Wave is pretty solid. "Tessellate" is a cool track.
