Veckatimist is an awesome album. And, along with Yellow House, to me it had appeal on only about the 2nd listen, some of it even on the 1st.

Shields takes a while to get into.

I think the opposite is true actually, I thought Shields upon initial release was their most accessible. Yellow House took me at least 5 listens to get the gist of and start hearing the small nuances they're typically great at.

Having given Painted Ruins some more listens, I do find it to be a good album. It's not one with any songs that are really going to jump out at you. However, the song I think is the best/most interesting is Glass Hillside. The segment starting around 1:04 sounds like Steely Dan. It's basically like a prog rock song. In fact I think the whole album could be called prog rock.

One thing I don't like about the album - and it is really really annoying: There is WAY too much sound compression on it. I dislike sound compression as it is, but it seems to be taken to an unnecessary height here. I find it to be very very distracting and makes the album really kinda hard to listen to.

The guy on The Needle Drop had the same complaint.

I just read that, back in the fall at the end of their tour last year, the band said their concert in LA could very well be their last. :(

Wut?? Well maybe best go out while you're still good instead of slowly petering out into mediocre insignificance.

One of my biggest disappointment on stage. It was in Berlin 3 of 4 years ago, on a place not made for gigs. The sound was howfull. We have left the place after 10 minutes. It was unbearable.:(
