History of Indie

Hi guys,

I'm writing a chapter on indie music as a part of a book on indie culture and wanted a really knowledgeable community to ask some questions so I get my facts straight about the bands.

My general chronological outline is:
1960's -- Garage Rock (indie roots)
1970's -- Punk Roots
1980's -- Punk
1990's -- A variety of genres, including grunge, etc.
2000's -- Modern indie and YouTube artists (not sure if that applies)

I would love any information as to how indie music (music made with the DIY attitude and in independent labels) evolved and changed over time.

Is this supposed to be about indie rock or independent music in general? If it's just indie rock and its antecedents, why are you leaving college rock and post punk out of the 80s section? If it's about independent music in general, why are you leaving out hip hop and metal?

I do cover hip hop and metal as well. I was just giving a general outline. As far as college rock and post-punk goes, I sort of had to cut short a little bit and stick to the bare essentials because my section actually has a limited length.

I think that those parts are very important in the indie music scene, and I'll try to cover them.

But what do you wanna know tho?

Basically, for each genre (like punk, post-punk, etc.):
1. What effect did a genre have on the indie scene?
2. When did all that happen?
3. What where some prominent groups and labels?

Those are shuch broad questions tho...

I mean Sonic Youth in the 80s were experimenting and creating the indie "sound" for example. Inside indie there are so many different subsets and sub genres.... so it's like really hard to nail this down for you. You might wanna just read through the various articles on pitchfork in like their decades sections, you'll learn a lot.

60s: The Fugs, the Velvet Underground, the Seeds, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, the Monks. Other ****, but start out with other **** I guess.

If you're talking about indie rock, those are the bare essentials.
