Alexander Giannascoli (born 1993), better known by his stage name (Sandy) Alex G (formerly Alex G), is an American musician based in Philadelphia. He started his career with DIY self-releases on Bandcamp, and began building up an audience with his label debut, DSU (2014), released on Orchid Tapes to critical acclaim from various publications. He later signed with Lucky Number, who reissued his earlier releases, Rules and Trick (2012). In 2015, he signed with Domino Recording Company and released his sixth studio album, Beach Music. He followed it in 2017 with Rocket, which received further acclaim and recognition.

I'm personally only familiar with Alex G's first album, DSU (2014), which sounds not unlike all the other clumsy lo-fi dorm room diy indie that exists on bandcamp, but that has just enough of an edge that, for example, while you could probably find it at barnes and noble, you wouldn't be able to buy it at starbucks.

(Sandy) Alex G has put out two new albums (and rereleased a bunch of old ones) between 2015-2017, all of which I'm only just hearing, and it's a lot different from the material I expected with the amateurish exploratory tones and mood swings of DSU in the back of my mind.

Alex's most recent release, Rocket (2017) made waves on pitchfork, consequence of sound, av club, and the like, and as such, contrarian that I am, I expected to dislike it. But after my first listen I'm left with an overwhelmingly positive impression. It's as charmingly naive and messy as DSU, but about a million times catchier. Surprisingly good stuff imo, I know I'm late on it but it's just the indie darling I needed to keep me warm this winter.
