Khruangbin are one of the bands I discovered this year. All decent musician imo.
I wonder if the first song of this set ("Maria También") was inspired by Erkin Koray, and 3 Hür El.

- Thanks for posting that clip by Khruangbin and re awakening my interest in Tiny Desk Concerts. Their style is exactly the kind of stuff I like so I'll be checking out their other stuff as they are a new name to me.

- I'm not a huge fan of The Cranberries, and prefered this acoustic TDC set more than their usual rock material. You're right, Plankton: Dolores O'R is a great performer

- What goes around does indeed come around Neapolitan, because the clips of Natalia Lafourcade and DakhaBrakha have already appeared in this thread! ;)

- alt-J are an English band that I don't know much about, but I would welcome comments because they are one of my son's favourite bands:-

That's Psy's fault cause he didn't label his video. If you search the name Natalia Lafourcade for this thread, Psy's post doesn't show. Kiii had a beef about this a while ago about not labeling videos, and he was right for a change. People should label videos.

I'm glad you enjoyed the Khruangbin TDM video.

MicShazam 12-17-2018 11:52 AM

I usually label videos. Might forget on occasion. But when youtube videos disappear, you would definitely have a pretty pointless post if it no longer even mentions what it was originally linking to.

Label your videos, people!

Thanks for being on board with this. Kiii is finally seeing video labeling vision come to fruition.

I used to play Khruangbin a lot in plug.dj last year
and on my Random Radio mixes. Fun little band from
Houston with a sweet and unique sound.
Their Christmas single is fun as well.

^ Yep, I'm with Kiiii and you guys on this! I used to think it was more succinct to not say what the Youtube clip was, but have improved since realising the same point that Neapolitan makes.

A-WA is a band from Israel with a traditional middle-eastern sound that has a bit of modern polish added. There's plenty to like about their songs, but for me, as so often, too much singing, not enough soloing for them to be real "favourites":-

Lisnaholic 01-08-2020 05:01 AM

Just in, in fact recorded one week ago and uploaded to Youtube this very morning, is this set by Spanglish Fly, who greet the new year with a bright, infectious joy:-

This band is looks like great road trip and my phone is not working on this trip but I have that feeling more comfortable myself.

^ Deqn Sue has some nice fresh songs. Doesn't hurt that she comes across as such a genuine, cheerful charmer.

Plankton 02-25-2020 06:58 AM

The dude could be Marcus Kings distant cousin. This is good.

Have you notice that the Desk Concert series is continuing during the era of covid with home recordings? Here's a faultless session from Jacob Collier - just right if you are in the mood for some light, jazzy vocal harmonies beautifully executed:-

Between songs, one guy mentions the intriguing detail that they have been quarantined together for 10 weeks, so even if you don't care for their style of music, gotta give them credit for being on better terms with each other than The Beatles when they recorded Let It Be.

Not sure whether you are joking or really not recognizing that it's just one guy.

HaHa! Not joking, but mistaken, grindy! I've just rushed back to edit out my mistake, but you've beaten me to it. :(

grindy 09-09-2020 05:24 AM

Sorry. I often ruin people's days by being to quick.
At least my girlfriend keeps complaining about it.

Lisnaholic 09-09-2020 05:31 AM

 yeah, speed is not always a virtue. Perhaps I'll try slowing down and researching a bit more ...

Man if I just heard that without the video proof I’d never believe they pulled off that perfect vocal harmonizations like that without meticulously using several individual takes in the studio. To pull that off in a single track live recording is something not many bands can do. That may not be first in line for what I usually listen to but damned if that don’t do it well.

Thank you for being taken in, just like I was!

Turns out that Jacob Collier has a high reputation among musicians, particularly for his skills in harmony:

Spoiler for 16 mins of analysing Jacob Collier:

grindy 09-09-2020 08:07 AM

lol
Yeah, dude's crazy talented.
I hope he improves a bit in the songwriting department but I mean he's still young.

Whoa, nice. Checking into more of this dude.

Here are three calming songs from Zimbabwe singer "Tuku". Not exceptional music, but exceptional quality, that elevates the simple to the beautiful:-

Quote:

Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi (22 September 1952 – 23 January 2019) was a Zimbabwean musician, businessman, philanthropist, human rights activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Southern Africa Region. Tuku was considered to have been Zimbabwe's most renowned and internationally recognised cultural icon of all time.

Oliver Mtukudzi, or "Tuku" as his fans lovingly call him, plays spirited music, born from the soul of Zimbabwe. He's been recording since the late 1970s, with about as many albums as his age: 60.

But Mtukudzi's new record reveals a heavier heart than before: Sarawoga is his first recording since the loss of his son Sam. He and Sam — also a guitar player, as well as a saxophonist — had a special relationship touring together. But in March 2010, Sam Mtukudzi was killed in a car crash at the age of 21. Oliver Mtukudzi recently told NPR's Tell Me More that "the only way to console myself is to carry on doing what we loved doing most. Sitting down [to] cry and mourn — I think it would have killed me."

OccultHawk 10-16-2020 07:44 AM

He was a great musician. I downloaded a bunch of his stuff off of Kazaa back in the day.

Lisnaholic 10-16-2020 07:58 AM

Sorry, why is that surprising? I saw them at the House of Blues around that time and they were crazy good.
