An Introduction

Hello to all! I have been lurking here for a few months, but as I found a reason to post today (minor iPod troubles) I thought I might as well introduce myself.

I was raised on classic rock, namely The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. When I was 10 or 11 and started making musical decisions of my own, I got into nineties alternative rock. My first purchase was Nirvana's In Utero, which I still think is superior to the more acclaimed NeverMind. This should tell you a bit about my age, which I will not specify.

Hearing the Beastie Boys' Sabotage on the radio was a turning point for me. After purchasing Ill Communication--and, subsequently, the rest of the Beastie Boys' catalog*--my tastes became much more focused on the hip-hop being made in the mid-late nineties. For the next 5 years or so (when I got to college), I listened to nothing but hip-hop.

I would consider hip-hop my area of "expertise," if you want to call it that. It still makes up more than a third of my music collection, although my tastes have drifted back toward non-rap artists since college. Finding the music of the soul and funk artists sampled in so many classic (a subjective term) rap songs has made me more appreciative of styles other than rock or hip-hop.

More recently, I have been more focused on the blues-based and psychedelic rock of the sixties and the glam rock and metal of the seventies. Of course, I have continued to listen to the styles I mentioned before as well. Some of my favorite artists (in alphabetical order, as they are listed on my iPod), in addition to those mentioned, include:

Tha Alkaholiks, The Beatnuts, Big Daddy Kane (pre-1990), Black Moon, Black Sabbath, Bob Dylan, Creedence..., Curtis Mayfield, Cypress Hill, David Bowie, De La Soul, The Doors, Elton John, Elvis Costello, EPMD, (Small) Faces, Funkadelic (/Parliament, etc.), Gang Starr, GhostFace Killah, Ice Cube, James Brown, Janis Joplin, Jay-Z, The Kinks, Main Source, Masta Ace, N.W.A., The Notorious B.I.G., Oasis, Organized Konfusion/Pharoahe Monch, Otis Redding, Pete Rock, Public Enemy, Rage Against the Machine, Scarface, Showbiz & A.G., Sly & the Family Stone, Smif-N-Wessun, Stevie Wonder, A Tribe Called Quest, The Who, Wu-Tang Clan...

...and, of course, many, many others. I have over 27,000 songs on my iPod, and that number continues to grow. I have only written a few reviews, but I consider myself a decent writer, and that skill may come with more experience. So, to sum it up, I love music. I am always looking for recommendations, and the artists I mentioned ought to give y'all a good idea of what I like. I hope I can be a contributor around here in the future.

*The Beastie Boys may be my most played artist. Although they haven't progressed lyrically since about 1988, their music exemplifies what I think hip-hop should be. Although they (obviously) make music themselves, they are fans, first and foremost. This is most evident on 1989's Paul's Boutique, which may be the best hip-hop album of all time musically. Between 1989 and 1994, I don't think anybody was making better music (at least for somebody with my tastes) than the Beastie Boys.
