Hey everyone

I already met a couple people but never got around to the proper introductions

I'm Blaine, my username is just there to give a nod to my favorite band Radiohead, please call me Blaine

i am a music nerd above all else, more specifically I'm a folk nerd (NOT COUNTRY....god I hate country) but I listen to absolutely anything (weather I give it a second listen is up for grabs though)

my music taste is about as varied as it can be but folk is just my current love and has been for around a year now. Radiohead is my favorite band but they are just special to me. Currently I'm listenin to Ray Lamontagne-Empty which is a amazing song if you haven't heard it

but I'm 17 a senior in high school and hope to be a doctor and I hope to meet a few good people around here

Welcome to the forum, Blaine.

Who are your favourite Folk artists?

FakePlasticKid 10-03-2010 10:08 PM

Iron and Wine was the first to come to mind
I mean the man is Folk imbodied, he got the beard, got the plaid, got the soft voice, got the sad eyes, I mean he is folk Jesus

but Mumford and Sons, Ray Lamontagne, Simon & Garfunkle, City & Colour, Monsters Of Folk, Bon Iver, just to name a FEW

TheCunningStunt 10-03-2010 10:10 PM

Nice list, I'm a little disappointed not to see Elliott on there but nice nonetheless.

Bon Iver are wonderful.

If you like Folk, have you heard The Complete Guide to Insufficiency? If not, I'd recommend it. Wonderful album.

lol I almost put him in there but I was like "well I would say thats more acoustic rock rather than folk" but then again I'm ashamed to say I've only known what I've heard on soundtracks, the last few weeks i've been trying to get back into listenin to a bunch of music I've been needin to

I mean Land Of Talks new album wasn't listened to till last week and I've been waitin for that thing forever. elliott smith and me only have a Royal Tenenbaums relationship atm but I'm hopin to make it better.

and no I haven't heard it but I shall check it out

also i forgot Nick Drake which is blasphemy

TheCunningStunt 10-03-2010 10:17 PM

You've only heard Elliott Smith on soundtrack albums?!
XO and Either/Or are must have albums.
I trust you'll get round to listening to them.

Pink Moon > All.
Nick Drake

already on it buddy, Twilight is a current favorite of mine

and david thomas broughton....yea its definitely not me, the sound is good the lyrics are good but the vocals sound.....really really forced i can respect it but its just not my thing

though I'm gonna give him a good chance, cause music normally grows on me

EDIT: sorta sounds like the 30's to me lol

TheCunningStunt 10-03-2010 10:27 PM

I wouldn't go round saying Twilight is a favourite of yours, someone might get the wrong idea. You hear Twilight... You think gay vampires. XO and Either/Or are so superior to From A Basement on the Hill it's unbelievable.

I don't get how some people can't listen to music because of the vocals. If the lyrics the artist has written are good, then I'll listen. Don't let the vocals ruin a really atmospheric, hauntingly beautiful album. :(
I believe the album was recorded in a church in Leeds in one take.

FakePlasticKid 10-03-2010 10:32 PM

believe me I know I really hate that now that word is now ruined, its cursed with stupid ass fan-girls of a horrible franchise

(makes me sad that Thom Yorke and Iron & Wine had songs on the soudntracks)

hey its not that I can't listen to it, but this is just not got my seal of approval at the moment, like I said I could listen to it but its not something I'd go crazy for its just me. like I said I'm gonna give it a good listen when I'm fully awake and stuff

and from what I read hes insanely spontaneous about his work and most of its improv, I love that he does all his stuff as just layers by himself, but the vocals sound like hes somebody thats not a good singer trying to sound good, meaning it reminds me of my voice XD

TheCunningStunt 10-03-2010 10:42 PM

I like Kristen Stewart though http://www.totalprotectioninteractiv...ex-poundit.gif

Even though she seems like a miserable cow.

It's not something I'm crazy over, just an album I quite like.
Really great folk album, definitely one to listen to on a rainy day.
I'm really not bothered about the vocals, a lot of great songwriters and musicians aren't very good singers, and that's not why they do what they do. So it doesn't really bother me if their vocals sound contrived and generally not very good.
If the music is good, and the lyrics are good then I'll listen.
The vocals have to be seriously annoying to put me off.

What are your feelings on Bob Dylan? His vocals are poor, but he's still a God amongst men.
