Hi kids, thirtiesgirl here. Brand nOObie to this forum. My username refers (sadly) not to my age, but an era - the 1930s. I love the history, style and decor of the '30s (as well as the '20s, '40s, boho-hipster '50s, mod '60s, post-punk '70s and new wave '80s).

Now that we've got that out of the way... I live in the Los Angeles area, work in education, and have been a music fan all my life. In high school and college, my tastes took a turn for the darker, quirkier and indie stuff. I did the college DJ thing for 5 years in the '90s, and wrote music reviews and did band interviews for a couple of friends' indie music mags. It was a great time to be on the tip of the indie music scene, just as bigger labels were starting to promote more indie bands and wanted more publicity for them. I got to interview a lot of great bands, including Lush, Curve, the Cranes, Throwing Muses, Belly, Moonshake, Einar from the Sugarcubes, His Name is Alive, Unrest, Laika, Ian from Pale Saints, and Mick Allen from the Wolfgang Press in a club toilet. (He was in the club toilet; not me. I was interviewing him by telephone on the radio, and the opening band was soundchecking. So Mick took the cordless phone into the club toilet so he could better hear my interview questions. Such a mensch. :thumb:) ...Oh, god. I used an emoticon. Kill me now. I thought I could make it through my first post without one.

...Anyway, as evidenced by some of the bands I interviewed back then, I like the indie pop stuff, some electronic music, and some psychedelic stuff (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, etc). I'm also into some Americana/alt-country, new-grass and folk stuff, some classic country (mostly Patsy, Loretta and Johnny), and a touch of jazz. I like a little exotica/lounge music on occasion (I'm a big fan of Yma Sumac), and my top 10 bands/artists at the moment would probably include Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Jolie Holland, Neko Case, Low, Stereolab, Broadcast, Laika, School of Seven Bells, and the Raveonettes.

I'm always interested in discovering new music, being introduced to new bands or old bands that I may have missed the first time around, and I love talking/writing about music. I look forward to some fun conversations with people on this forum. I best stop typing now before this post turns into a novel. :rolleyes: (Gah! A second emoticon! I truly deserve to die.)

Welcome! You seem to have led an interesting life thus far, to say the least, and from the looks of it your taste in music is just as varied. I look forward to seeing you around the forums :)

Hi thirtiesgirl. I'm a big fan of 1930s graphic design so I guess we sort of have a love of the 30s aesthetic in common. And between your intro post here and the posts of yours I've seen around you seem to have a pretty good taste in music. Anyway, welcome aboard!

Welcome fellow Los Angeleno. Just out of curiosity, what part of LA are you from? If it's embarrassing (i.e. south of Santa Monica Blvd.) you can make something up.

Aw, thanks! Yeah, I do love '30s graphics and style. I'm also an occasional art nouveau fan.

Heh. No worries. I live in the South Bay, although I previously lived in the (whisper it) San Fernando Valley for 8 years. I'm not from LA, although I grew up in SoCal. I moved to LA in '97 for the better job market and music scene. I'm tired of it now and would like to leave ('it' being LA in general, not the music scene, which I think is great). I'm just not sure where I want to go. In the years I've lived here, I've experienced a lot of "east side/west side" attitude from people I've met and I get tired of that pretty damn quickly. No one's neighborhood is any better than anyone else's. Maybe more prone to crime and violence if you live in or near certain parts of South Central, but that's about it.
