First time poster, looking at this board to see what it is all about. Was looking for a music board that encompassed many genres and styles. I like to keep things ecclectic and different and have a love many many types of genres and sounds.

Anyways, My name is David, I am from Canada and like to discuss music and watch trash horror films and other fun things like that.

Anyways, thought I would do the standard pre-post introductions and say hello to all !

Welcome David! Glad to see Squirrel Bait mentioned. Do you perhaps like Bastro and Gastr del Sol as well?

Oh and trash horror is always fun :) Judging by your avatar, you're into zombie movies...

Well, at the moment I am more discovering the majority of "post-hardcore", I have been trying to expand my knowledge of it, so at the moment I have not listened to those bands. But I will check into them, I am always into recommendations ! What are some good albums to start with, will get to it soon.

Yeah, I love Zombie movies, especially "Dawn of the Dead" (original), "Return of the Living Dead", "Braindead [Dead Alive]", "Cemetary Man", "The Evil Dead" and "Re-Animator" just to name a few. But I love stuff from many sub-genres of horror. Ranging from "Black Christmas", "Halloween", "A Nightmare on Elm Street", "Audition", "Cronos", "Candyman" and others... I have been into horror since I was about 11, when I saw "IT" when it was first broadcast on TV.

I mentioned those bands because of David Grubbs. Squirrel Bait was his first band, and later he went on to do great things with Bastro and especially Gastr del Sol. Bastro is like a noisy post-hardcore. I would suggest 'Diablo Guapo' album, although all three are worth checking out. And Gastr del Sol is usually considered to be one of the pioneers of post-rock. They can be quite experimental. All their albums are worth listening, but I'll suggest especially: 'Serpentine Similar' and 'Crookt, Crackt, or Fly'.

That's a nice list. I remember Black Christmas, but I haven't seen it in ages. Audition is great, I watched a few months ago. Haven't seen Cronos though.

Yeah, will check those albums out.

the original "Black Christmas" is an essential early slasher, shaped Halloween in many ways. Bob Clark did a great job with that one. While it is sometimes said to be the first slasher, that is untrue. However it was the first to combine all the elements that all future slashers would use. It was the blue print for all things after. It made the recipe and Halloween baked the cake I say. Also amazing to think that Bob Clark would go on to do another Christmas movie... A Christmas Story, talk about night and day there !

Also, "Cronos" is a great film. If you are a fan of Guillermo del Toro it is worth seeking out and watching. His first film I believe, a dark vampire movie. It is a classic film now. I had to pick it up, as I also love Pan's Labyrinth, thought that was one of the best films I had seen in ages. I enjoy the majority of his work.

Yeah, I have to see Black Christmas again. I vaguely remember it. I always thought that one of Mario Bava's films was considered to be the first slasher, um, Bay of Blood I think. Well, at least one of the earliest.

As for Cronos, thanks for recommendation. Looking at Guillermo del Toro's filmography I realized that I've seen almost everything except for his first two films. Beside Pan's Labyrinth I really liked The Devil's Backbone. That's the first one I saw.

Yeah. First slasher is pretty vague ya know. Can go all the way back to at least the 30's and find something that could be considered an early slasher.

Bay of Blood (probably better known as "Twitch of the Death Nerve") was an early example. But as I say, I think historians say Black Christmas was the first to be a combo of all the elements used in future slashers. Slasher's have a specific formula they follow to be considered more "true" and it all came together with Black Christmas. However, debate will always exsist on which would be first I believe.

Many films also did take elements from Bay of Blood... Friday the 13th part 2 specifically, which basically ripped off a few scenes from Bay of Blood.
