Hello there.
I'm a 19 year old guy from Canada, and my taste in music is becoming increasingly diversified. Music recommendation services are only good to me for so long; I suppose forums provide a more nuanced alternative, and broader perspectives.

When it comes to music, I definitely have discerning taste in a broad variety of genres. I'm open minded with picky taste in music- if that makes a shred of sense. You could say I'm primarily a pop fan, and I like a lot of styles of music that people generally consider kitschy, lame, whatever. I take it in stride.

Here's the basic outline of what I'm into (in no particular order):
*Generally, if it's super angry or blaringly loud/ abrasive, I probably won't like it. Sorry.

EASY LISTENING:
"New Age" like Enya, Origa, Loreena McKennitt
Lounge of all sorts; Piero Umiliani, Combustible Edison, legit Elevator Music...

ADULT ALTERNATIVE:
90's "Ectophilia" type music- Alanis Morissette, Sarah McLachlan, The Cranberries, Sheryl Crow etc.

ELECTRONIC:
Various forms of Chillout
Early Electronic (Moogs, Theremins etc.)
"hauntology"/ Ghost Box Records: i.e. The Advisory Circle, Belbury Poly...
Italo Disco/ Hi-NRG/ Europop and its recent revival.
Some Electro-Industrial
Nu-Jazz
House/ Acid Jazz
The divas: Bjork & Roisin Murphy
Game soundtracks, including MIDI and 8-Bit/Chiptune.

JAZZ/ BLUES
Vocal Jazz, Bossa Nova, various styles of Latin Jazz, Space Age, Jazz Funk, Jazz Fusion...

POP/ROCK:
Art Rock (like Griffin, Be Bop Deluxe), New Wave (Pop/New Romantic), "Sophisti-Pop," various Urban styles (Neo-Soul, Pop/R&B, Pop/Hip-Hop), Doo-Wop, Disco, Dance Pop, Noise Pop, Dream Pop, "Indie Pop", Sunshine Pop, "Surf Music", AM Pop, Chamber Pop, Folk Pop/ Rock, Pop Punk...

Oh, you. I've got a varying pile of recs if you come to my corner of this site. You've got similar taste to me, to be quite honest.

I really look forward to your being here. Almost salivating over it, really, but I'll pretend I'm not, so as not to creep you out. :P

Let me just say, best and most thought-out and intelligent introduction post ever. Bar none. That I've read.

I'm not really into most of the music you mention, but well done for being so concise and yet so precise, if that makes sense. I'm sure you'll find people here with your tastes (see above).

I really, really hope you stick around and don't just fade away like most new people here. Your tastes are diverse, you are obviously intelligent, and you seem like a non pretentious nice guy. That's just what we need.

I'm really not into most of the music you like, but I am appreciating all of the jazz I saw on that list. Especially the nu-jazz, I've really been getting into it lately. My current favorites are The Hidden Orchestra, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Floex, and BADBADNOTGOOD. And the producer Madlib, if he counts. Any suggestions for good nu jazz? Or just new jazz? ;)

Just wanted to let you know that while my taste is diverse, I still have yet to find footing in some of the genres I mentioned (but I know I definitely enjoy them all). I'm no expert, by any means.

ThePhanastasio -Nice! I took a look at your 100 albums thread. Our tastes seem to be quite compatible- similar aesthetic. I can't wait 'till I have time to read all the posts that go along with the music.

I'm honestly just scratching the surface when it comes to Nu-Jazz, so I really should be asking you for suggestions! But so far I'm introducing myself to the bigger names that are oft-tagged as Nu-Jazz, like Amon Tobin, Skalpel, Jazzanova, Bonobo, Zero dB, Nightmares on Wax... stuff like that. My leanings in that area are toward Trip-Hop, Breakbeat and R&B influences, but I'm starting to venture slowly into the more ambient realm, like The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, which I recently came across searching for film-noir style jazz; and Floex- wow- thanks for mentioning him! Good stuff.

Gotta say, I like it here already. I think I just might stay. Thanks guys.

Ah, you're getting into ambient jazz? I can help with that. :D

I would try out The Contemporary Noise Quartet/Quintet/Sextet. Not quite ambient, but very dark, and awesome. They added a member each album, hence the name change.



Bohren & der Club of Gore are my favorites in the genre, but that's not for any real reason. I have just listened to them more. They started out as a doom metal band and then made the switch to jazz... but kept playing at their previous speed and heaviness. Good stuff.



Dale Cooper Quartet & The Dictaphones. I really don't have any knowledge of this group. I have no idea who they are or why there are two names. Maybe it's a collaboration? Don't know, but it's awesome. This group stand out from my other suggestions in that they have a guitarist, and a singer.



Bersarin Quartett is actually an electronica artist, but his work is decidedly jazzesque. Not sure if he's really in the same category as the others, but it's still good, and fits in just fine.



Somewhere Off Jazz Street is yet another electronica artist in disguise. Every sound in his music is made artificially, but listening to it, you would swear it was a full band.



There are others, but that should get you started. Enjoy. And note, these bands are best listened to driving at night in a steady rain. Possibly while smoking.

Dale Cooper Quartet is lovely, and I'll add to that the Portico Quartet.
