A leap of faith!
Hi all,
I'm misspoptart, totally upset by the lack of people in my life that listen to unique and interesting tracks, but also disappointed with the general lack of music appreciation my friends have! Since I moved to a new country, I've relished in exposure to wild and crazy stuff from in and around Europe, but I'm still not satisfied! I'm hoping this community will help that a bit! So, I like music from probably every genre in every country, and a lot of what I love I probably haven't even discovered yet. My newest addiction is dubstep (I'm a newb, though). I also have a review blog for trashy Euro tunes and their accompanying dumb videos, because in my homeland (the US), we don't get enough of that. I look forward to reading all of you and catching up on the latest! |
Welcome aboard! I first came to MB for the same reason (though it was just a new city as opposed to a new country) and I've been here going on six years now. Hope you get as much out of this place as I do!
So what country are you in? And who are some of your favorite artists? |
I've lived in Istanbul for two years, but I'm originally from Maine.
I hate that question! I feel like if I just list my favorite artists I'll get judged hardcore, because a lot of it is trash and I acknowledge that. The reality is I listen to a healthy dose of everything. But for the sake of being friendly and confident, I can say: Shantel Atmosphere Dave Matthews Girl Talk Parov Stelar Goldfrapp Potap i Natasya Manu Chao Madonna Outkast Pierrot (a classy visual kei band) Bonobo Shakira Shania Twain Marina & the Diamonds Akcent Amon Tobin Dino Merlin Nobuo Uematsu Hooverphonic Rustic Overtones Kazaky Massive Attack Muchachito Bombo Infierno Tribalistas Baaba Maal X-Perience ..and basically anything from Bollywood. Just a sampling in no particular order, but yeah, those were the first artists that came to mind :P |
Well, I like a lot of the artists you mention (Atmosphere, Dave Matthews, Parov Stelar, Goldfrapp, Madonna, Outkast, Bonobo, Amon Tobin, Massive Attack, Baaba Maal) so no judgement here. And you mentioned several I don't know so that's always a plus! I think you'll find most people here appreciate people who are fun, open-minded and can talk intelligently about music rather than having some approved list of favorites. :)
Anyway, moving from Maine to Istanbul seems like quite a contrast. How do you like it? |
I second the question of how you like Instabul. I'm a fellow traveler, I'm going to move to Nicaragua or awhile in a few weeks. I've always wanted to go to Instanbul, so maybe you can help me decide whether that's a good idea or not.
Have you heard of the website, CouchSurfers? |
Welcome to MB.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I love Istanbul. I came as a tourist, but I'm staying for at least two more years. Nicaragua sounds great too, I speak Spanish but I've never been to Central or South America. What will you be doing there? |

I'll be studying an doom missionary work. I'll mostly be helping to take care of street children, and distributing food across the country so that the Nicarguan pastors, volunteers and such in charge can feed their starving communities. I'm pretty stoked. Anyway, when I make a CS account I'll look you up. :) |
On the contrary, Batlord, I simply mean that they chose the non-cross dressing path (sortof) and have a more melodic sound! :)
But yes, I see your point. ;) To Blarobbarg, that sounds great. I've never really done anything selfless from the heart before, so I admire you. ^^; It might be hard to couchsurf in poorer parts of the country (less internet access), but I'm sure you can do it! You can also do what others have done in Central America and just explain to people your situation and say you are looking for a host family. Some families just take people in if you agree to help around the house or farm :) |

You should try to do some doom missionary work though.

Intrigued, I checked it out, but seems Couchsurfer.com is just another search engine? Am I missing something? What's so great about it?

I suddenly get the feeling that the title of my thread doesn't really jive with the subject matter anymore, lol. DOOOOOOOOM

You a fan of doom metal or any of its related genres? Sludge, funeral, stoner, doom-jazz? |
I've never heard of any of these genres....:o:
But if this is a multiple choice question and I don't lose points for choosing the wrong option, I'll make an educated guess and say I'd probably become a fan of doom jazz. |

Sludge: Funeral doom: Stoner metal: Doom jazz (you want hear a lot about this genre, since it's kind of a strange combination.): |

Don't let Blarobbarg scare you away with those. There's also traditional doom, which is basically Black Sabbath worship.
|
I'm listening to the sludge right now. If I end up liking any of this, I may have to change my name to missmetaltart. Or....an alter ego?
O_o |
Okay Blaro, I've listened to all the tracks you posted, and I have to say the funeral doom is the most moving. It seriously sounds like death happened. Also, that raspy smoky voice puts the fun in the funeral, doesn't it?
The stoner metal and the sludge didn't really do it for me. Stoner metal is very headbangy. I do like the sound of the vocals but I'm not really loving the mechanic sound, which gives me the sensation of drowning or running. Sludge sounds like sludge...and that makes me uncomfortable. That doom jazz track feels a bit low key and anime soundtrack-like. There is definitely something haunting about it, though. Strange combo indeed, but I wish the jazzy bits were more upbeat. Thanks for the exposure, I'm always up for something new! On to Batlord's suggestions... Edit: Batlord! Your final two suggestions were not available in my country. :( The first one went down well though. I might like it better while playing Silent Hill. |

And dang, I would not expect you to enjoy Evoken the most out of the songs I posted... funeral doom is even too much for me most of the time, but hey, if you liked it, good for you! Check out the Metal Recommendation thread for more! :) And yeah, as Batty said, mine are definitely not beginner's doom, there's a lot more friendly bands in the genre. For instance, Torche. They're mostly just a fun hard rock with lots of hooks and guitar solos, but they're also sludge and stoner metal (or at least they were at one time). I love 'em to death, and when I want to listen to something that's not depressing, they're usually my first choice. |
Don't be impressed! I'm here because I'm obsessed with music and open to listen to anything at least once! Shouldn't everyone on MB be like that? ;)
Okay enough facetiousness. I like the Torche! They do have a very optimistic sound for a metal band! Reminds me of a way more interesting Foo Fighters. "Roaming" is its title, but I'm imagining a slightly urgent roam. Perhaps "proactively searching for" could describe the track better :P I like!! "Healer" is good too. The band really sounds familiar, like maybe I've heard some sounds in a different country that are similar. I see what you mean by "not depressing"--the tone of these two tracks is uplifting somehow! Short and sweet, also. Those 8+ minute tracks did a number on me. Rock on. I'll be looking into this band! |
I'd just like to nominate you (early I know but anyway) for "Most improved member" already for the 2013 noms! :thumb:

Does anybody know why my last.fm chart won't work anymore??
