Hello, folks! I'm 23 years old student from the suberbs of Warsaw, being quite well into music. Alas, I don't mean any practice, but a theoretical knowledge about any sort of World Music, mainly from Europe. It would be both honour and pleaure to talk with you about that sort of music, as well as about other genres. And one more thing: sorry for not displaying any profile photo, it's because of the lack of time. I'm going to set it as soon as possible.

I´m always happy to meet a new member who´s interested in world music. You´ll find plenty of it to explore here; popular material from African and Latin countries and plenty of obscure genres too. The MB world music section can move slowly at times, but the members who contribute there are all pleasant and helpful.

Do you have any particular favourites? Bands, styles, instruments?

Favourites... I've been into Celtic music since I remember, adding to that time some periods of "brake" from this culture. But my love to that tradition is still valid. Moreover, thanks to some auditions in radio, the interest to other musical places in the world was aroused. So in fact, everything considering the term world music pays my deep attention.

Styles - I love to listen both traditional and modern versions of that music. Such artists like Xera, Afro Celt Sound System, Martyn Bennett etc. are as important for me as Bonga, Capercaillie and so on. I believe that world music doesn't know the term "boundaries" in both geographical (horizontal) and aestethical (vertical) way. I'm not a conservative at that point. :)

Yes, I like a lot of Celtic music too, especially Altan and the Chieftains.

Of the bands you mention, the only name I recognise is Afro Celt Sound System, so I might investigate those other artists later on if I have time. I hope you´ll be telling us about some Polish/East European sounds too.

Yes, I agree with what you say about the boundaries of world music - they are so blurred that they barely exist anymore. That´s a good description; the "vertical" and the "horizontal". :)

The Valravn's sounds are well known for me, but thanks for your recommendation. Considering bands from my region, it would be almost a sin not to mention about Kapela Ze Wsi Warszawa, better known in the world as Warsaw Village Band. The work of that group contains traditional sounds of Masovian music dressed up in brand new electric form. I would not hesitate to share with more artists or bands if something else would come to my mind. ;)

Hello, Pedestrian! In case of movies I don't have any specified types - everything depends mainy on mood and circumstances. There are plenty of defined movies, though, I like so much, for instance "Truman Show", "Seven", "Train of Life", "Braveheart", "Lawrence of Arabia" or "The Bridge on the River Kwai", which I can watch over and over.

Hello, Blarobbarg! As I have previously said, I'm not a devoted defender of strict forms nor shapes of "world music". I'm interested in both traditional and modern ways of presentation that genre. My first react when I listen to old songs in new outfit is not indignation nor wrath but rather curiosity. Unlike many critics, I don't think that "world fusion" is a mockery for traditional tunes, but some sort of chance to widespread its popularity. Of course, all in smart proportions. ;)
