Hello!

Hi! I've been a lurker for around a year and finally decided to make an account. Uhhh, I don't know how to really describe my taste in music because it's pretty eclectic. For a while I was really into the indie scene, but I think I've grown out of that for the most part. Right now I've been focusing on discovering old music, although I do keep up with new releases from bands I'm recommended or know I like.

But as far as specific music I like... it's pretty varied. Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Tom Waits, Outkast, Jay-Z, Eminem, Sun Ra, Miles Davis, John Coltrane. Lately I've been getting into a lot of shoegaze/dream pop stuff like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, older M83, Cocteau Twins.

Aside from that, I play alto sax (which explains the jazz) and the clarinet (which mostly means that I have a tendency to nerd out about some orchestral stuff). I can play a little flute, too, but not well. Unfortunately I don't really play any cool instruments, unless you count the sax. I've always really wanted to play bass, but I'm afraid I might be too tiny (5'4" female with small hands).

But yeah, I think that's about it!

Welcome to MB. I"m sure Burning Down will be happy to have another classical buff around or atleast I think you are one based off of the instruments you play.

I had a cool band teacher in elementary that would size you up by looking over your hands, jaw line, spaces between your teeth, etc. To suggest what you should play and after my examination she decided I should play clarinet but my mother couldn't afford to get me the instrument at that time. I may pick up clarinet one day on my own though.

Well, I wouldn't consider myself a buff, but I do dabble. I've taken a few musical theory/history classes (back when I thought I'd be a music major), so I know a fair bit.

You should totally pick up the clarinet though! You can get a decent student setup with a mouthpiece for $200 or so. It's not the most glamorous instrument to admit you play, though. Most of the reactions I get when I say I play clarinet are "Oh, like Squidward?" I would like to imagine I can play at least a little better than Squidward.

I don't follow Spongebob but I'd love to charm some snakes.
