Newbie Here

Hello everyone,

I am a huge music lover, so it appears I stumbled upon a forum that should be interesting. While I appreciate a wide variety of music, my favorites tend to be within the rock and alternative genres. Local H is my absolute favorite band ever. Some others not far behind include Guns N Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Avenged Sevenfold, Third Eye Blind, AC/DC and many others.

At one point I was compiling a list of my top 1000 bands of all time. At some point I may post that, but will hold off for a while.

Something I do want to start, but unsure if it is within the rules though; I want to start a new thread every week featuring a new band. Anyone who wishes to participate can. For the artist of the week, I, along with anyone else who wants to, will listen to every album from that band and the list the top five favorite songs by the artist. I know there is something within the rules about no "Help me with my project/study/survey/poll" so I want to make sure I am within the rules of the website. I think this will be fun to compare the lists people make from each band. Also, I will make sure to mix it up with some well known bands and some bands most have not heard of. Of course, I will also have a variety of genres. Hopefully this is all acceptable within the rules and that some of you will participate. I wish I could do more than one band per week but sometimes work becomes too busy. One band per week should allow enough time for me and others to listen to all albums and choose the top five songs.

Oh, in case it matters. I am a 37 year old male who lived in Minnesota most of his life but has lived on Maui for the past two years.

Following up, if it is allowed for me to run this weekly band/artist of the week to encourage people to listen to all of their music and report back with the best 5 songs, I am also wondering if it is allowed for me to post a playlist of each band every week. The method that I am aware of is a website called Grooveshark. I like it because it is free. I also know some websites have bands who refuse to allow them on their website. I believe all bands/artists are on Grooveshark but I may be wrong.

There is no benefit to me listing the playlists via Grooveshark except it makes it more convenient for people to participate in listening to all of the albums by the band of the week. However, I still want to make sure I am not breaking any rules before starting this activity. Also, if there is a free website better than Grooveshark for posting all albums by artists/bands, I am open to trying new ones too. Of course a person can find most things on Youtube as well.

Welcome here. I love to play guitar and piano. Hope one day I will be a really good musician.

Are there any Mods or anyone familiar with this forum who can suggest to me if my band of the week plan will violate any rules? I notice there are restrictions on the types of links a person posts. For convenience to those participating, I would like to post a link to a playlist of all songs for each band of the week. Is this OK? Any other suggestions to make this project most effective in not only following all forum rules, but also in encouraging people to participate?

Sounds like a cool idea, although a week is a rather short time to digest an entire discography. I'd go for it, and if people are interested, they'll participate.

Fifteen posts in the music forums are required before you can post links (to prevent spamming), but that shouldn't be a problem for you to achieve. Just don't litter threads with single-word responses. :)

Best of luck, and welcome.

Pet Sounds, thank you for clarifying the 15 post rule. As you stated, that should be easy to accomplish. For some bands with an extensive catalog like AC/DC, it might be a challenge to thoroughly go through everything within only a week. For me personally, I plan to listen to the entire library once to narrow down my list of favorites then listen to those songs a few more times to trim down to five.

I was originally just going to do this project with friends/family/coworkers on Facebook. However, not many will participate there. Here they can join while I know there will be some music lovers here who will gladly participate in such a thing.
