In my experience, the best way to compliment a girl is to just walk up and spit beer into our faces. If you aren't at a bar, just bring one with you in a knapsack or small travel pack. Just walk right on up, say nothing (your mouth is already full of beer anyway) and just spit as hard as you can directly into the face portion of the female. Then softly brush the wet hair away from her eyes and stare directly into them, breathing and puffing your chest out as rapidly and forcefully as possible.

In all seriousness though, I think we take compliments differently from women is because there are typically no underlying strings attached. It can be underhanded from women sometimes, but even then it's pretty simple and quickly over. I'm speaking for myself, but I'm sure many women inherently understand that most guys will initiate conversation and compliment because they want something. Whether it's a chance to date you, sleep with you, etc; most guys are after something. It's quite obvious, and it's not a bad thing in general, but it does eventually become sort of typical and tiring after years and years.

But you probably shouldn't open with pictures that you modeled for. It makes it seem like you relish the attention of being a sexual object.
