Hi; long-time lurker from Texas here.

Welcome. Nice intro.

What English folk music do you like? I've been meaning to check it myself.

The Batlord 01-27-2017 09:05 PM

Yeah I always see lame indie bands when I go to weddings in barns.

Chula Vista 01-27-2017 09:08 PM

Welcome aboard!

Chiomara 01-27-2017 09:36 PM

Thanks everyone.

Mainly just any decent covers I can find of old child ballads. (like The House Carpenter/The Daemon Lover and Tam Lin, though those are Scottish ones I think). Which are just very old, traditional folk songs with countless variations, and they all typically have a rather grim (or tragic) subject matter. Like 'The Well Below the Valley' which is about infanticide. I highly recommend the Pol McAdam version. But generally you can find halfway decent stuff by just typing in "traditional English folk" into youtube.
And of course Joan Baez.. I'm much more familiar with American folk, though. Alan Lomax's field recordings are wonderful.

Sorry, I'm a bit long-winded.

For the past decade or so I've occasionally popped into this forum to lurk and find new music, so I figured I might as well start posting rather than just skulking around creepily. I'm convinced everyone has a music twin (in terms of musical tastes) out there, so it'd be great if I could find mine!

I'm 27--almost 28--and have been an avid music hoarder since the age of 15. (I was a goth you see, but an ~*authentic*~ goth, of course, so no Evanescence for me! Yes, I was unbearably pretentious.) I have no actual musical talent, though, which I compensate for by spending an embarrassing amount of time creating extremely specifically-themed mood playlists to accompany some imaginary scene or story in my head. (It's practically a medical problem at this point)
I'm not as much of a music hoarder these days though, unfortunately, due to my poor old dinosaur of a laptop (it can't handle much). So I hang around on Spotify mostly.

Oh, and I used to publish playlists on that site 8tracks under the username 'zulabelle'.

Obligatory list of favorite bands/genres (I feel like these lists must be really boring to read) -- just off the top of my head, though, not an official list or anything:
Very early traditional folk (both american--like john jacob niles-- and english/scottish/irish. Give me all the murder ballads) King Dude, Nico Muhly, Kate Bush, any and all 1930s-50s stuff + motown, snooty experimental ambient stuff, 80s synthpop, old haitian and afro-cuban jazz, 60s cumbia and chicha (and some of the modern stuff too) moody neoclassical, 70s horror movie + David Lynch soundtracks, stoner metal here and there, Hector Zazou, Rowland S. Howard, loooooots of south american and mexican artists, Antony & the Johnsons, Metric, Depeche Mode (even though they're cheesy as hell), Tricky, Judy Collins, Warsaw Village Band, nu-disco, Anna Calvi, pretty much all classical (especially polish composers) ... I pretty much like everything except for poppy radio country, edm and bland indie bands (you know, the kind you always hear playing at barn weddings and in overpriced cafes.)
My newest favorites are Ibrahim Maalouf and Chancha Via Circuito.

..Don't quiz me on any of those though; I am so picky that I rarely listen to more than a few songs on any given album after the first listen, and my attention span is very very short. Long car-rides with me are a very jarring and irritating experience for that reason.

Ok, that's enough probably!

Damn, nice intro! It's great to see someone else on here who appreciates Latin music! :)

I'd just say it's nice to see someone who takes their time over their intro rather than "Hi guys its me" or whatever. Nice to meet you, and welcome. Very eclectic mix of music there; I think you may just fit right in here.

See ya around!
:)

Welcome and excellent intro. We usually have to ask new people to list off their favorite artists/bands but you beat us to the punch.

Well, I try to be thorough. Thanks y'all! I think it was the themed compilation threads that originally got me hooked on this forum many moons ago.

Niceee

He's so under-appreciated! I've had Autoluminescent on a loop in my brain for about a decade. "I'M GOIN NOVAAAAAA..."
