Hello everyone

My (real) name is James, I'm a folk musician living in Ireland.

To earn a crust I typically sing American and Irish folk music, and the odd bit of church singing.

In hobby mode I produce techno and EDM and release it online and I've even released bits and pieces here and there.
I've also done some classical training and singing in past lives as well, I spent time in uni studying composition and music technology by day and singing rock 'n' roll and gospel by evening.

So I guess you could say I'm not just a useless and ill-informed practitioner of one or two styles of music...

...I'm useless at almost every genre going!

I've spent "phases" enjoying different things, and mostly now-a-days I enjoy listening to music I haven't heard before that I ask people to recommend for me.

highlight of my past few months have been:
TuneYards (a composer friend recommended)
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (folk friend)
Jake Thackray (some old man in yorkshire)
The Avalanches (I forget)

Of artists I've already heard of, my last few months was mostly spent listening to Bob Dylan, Aphex twin's two newest releases (Cheetah ans Syro) and lots of Sacred Choral music (in this instance, Arvo Part and Maurice Duruflé)

Alternative music is about to become a large part of my life since I recently joined my friend Dr.Mindflip as the character 'Dollhead'. I have previously released work under that name, but now Dollhead is more of a fleshed out character with a mask and outfits and everything (almost needs it's own introduction).
We did some festivals (in Ireland) last year and and after about 16 months of work we're about to start into launching our first big album (we kinda did it all ourselves, and to be honest I NEVER want to try that again, the work never ends).

This, and also the fact that I'm not currently involved on any communities that chat about this kind of music, is why I had a quick google for alternative music forums.
The ones I mostly post on currently are techno/IDM/Electronic.

I don't know how lovely-dovey this place is or how business-like, but in general here's a short personality report that should cover most basses.

I'm a cold, logical communicator in text form, like a vulcan off of start trek; (often mistook early on for rudeness or aggressiveness). This is in stark contract to how I communicate in person, which is expressive and emotive and may stem from an unusual relationship my brain has with language
(It's similar to a mild linguistic mental-handicap that will sometimes manafest as strange misspellings and things)

I'm a creative centered person, and Lazy but supportive.
Emotionally, other people's pain makes me suffer more then my own, which makes me more of an introvert when times are bad (like in today's global climate) and an extrovert when times are good.
I mostly see my singing as a means of giving emotional/spiritual help/connection to other people without my ego or my own expression being involved.
I see my electronic music, on the other hand, as my form of self expression.
I don't know what I see Dr.Mindflip's music as other then I like his writing. Being in an original music band is still new to me.

Right. *Looks at all the crap I wrote*
...I reckon that'll do.

... AND I'M HILARIOUSLY FUNNY

Dollhead,
welcome to MB
Mícheál Ó Domhnaill is my favorite Irish singer. He was in Skara Brae and the The Band. I love the song An Cailin Rua by Skara Brae. If I ever bother to make a list top ten song, it would rank as one of them.

I don't know too much about EDM, but I like Timothy Wiles, James Pullen, and Joel Zimmerman.

If you decide you like a larger avatar (250pix x 175pix wide)

Don't mind him, he's Irish-American.

Cead mile failte! Nice to have another Irishman here: there are a few of us scattered around.

As for how this place is, well, generally, let's see: imagine walking down a badly-lit street at night and hearing a commotion somewhat like this:

IT ****ING IS!
IT ****ING IS NOT!
I ****ING TELL YOU, IT IS! YOU'RE A ****!
A ****, AM I? I'LL ****ING KILL YOU!
YEAH? YOU AND WHAT ARMY?

and then imagine this, ah, debate, is about music.

If you walk away from such an exchange, you may be the kind of person who won't like it here.
If you walk towards it, interested, then you'll do much better.
And if you strap on your kneepads, grab a stick and wade right in, then you're gonna fit in just fine.

In other words. we're a bunch of ****s who like other ****s, sometimes. And very occasionally we will talk about music, but most of the time we're ripping each other new ones wherever we may be.

Leave your training wheels at home, they'll be no use to you here. Probably get robbed anyway.

Or to put it another way, welcome!
:)

Welcome, James!

Vulcans (especially half-human Vulcans!) are cool. So is your tiny avatar.

Thank you for the summary of your musical tastes, your projects (with Dr. Mindflip, Owly, and the Barron, apparently), and your emotional life.

I hope you'll enjoy the MusicBanter community!

You guys seem like a mixed bag.

It should be good.

Now excuse me while I go around reading your conversations and judging everyone silently like the first few days in Supernanny.

^ With that attitude, I can see you're going to do well here, Dollhead!

Don't forget to pounce on every spelling/punctuation mistake you notice as well. Some members here have cultivated a proud tradition of Total Grammar-Error Intolerance, so you'll want to get in with them asap. ;)

Also, you're going to need these :ar_15s: if you risk going into the Current Affairs sub-section.
(They'll be useful if you discover anybody Fudging Genre Definitions too.)
